  1. Go to http://wwwhslda.com and do a search for your state. It will tell you all the laws in easy to understand terms. That's a great starting point.

Homeschooling is awesome-keep asking questions here or find some online homeschool forums to get your questions answered. Best of luck to you!!

  2. no one needs to be certified if you use an online school. It can be free depending on where you live. Some are free and others are private and tuituion based.

  3. It costs as much or as little as you and your mum want to spend on it: my parents home-educate me and my siblings for approx. $50 per kid/per year; other families spend thousands of dollars doing it.

As for certification? That costs nothing as there is no such thing as certification required for homeschool.

In some places, your mum may need to register herself/you with the local education department; in others, she may have the option of doing so (some States in my country have started paying allowances to home-educating families IF they choose to register!); or there may simply be no register kept of homeschoolers.

Assuming you're living in the USA, go to http://www.hslda.org and simply click on your State to check out the rules r.e. any mandatory/optional registration etc. Otherwise check with your country's national homeschooling organisation (I reckon you are in N. America somewhere though cuz you say 'Mom' and not 'Mum', *smile*). Alternatively, if you're still having difficulties, post your home State here and someone here'll find out the rules for you!

Even if you find you are living in one of the States that requires registration, there is nothing difficult, complicated or irksome about it; chances are it would just involve your mum needing to fill out a form/write a letter with your name, address, date of birth and the fact that she is going to be educating you herself, outside of school, from then on.

So getting 'sertified' (sic) (in truth, registered) might cost your mum the price of a postage stamp but shouldn't cost much more.

  4. There's only one state that I've heard of that requires some sort of mini-certification for parents who don't meet other criteria for homeschooling; I think it's Washington state. If the laws where you live don't require it, then your mom doesn't need certification. If the laws do require it, then it seems to me it's some simple weekend course. Your mom should look up the laws at your state's department of education and take it from there.

Homeschooling will cost as much as you choose to purchase. If you do an online public school, it costs nothing and your mother would not need certification. If you do some sort of private school (online or correspondence), it'll cost whatever the tuition costs for the chosen program.
