I've gained about 45-50 lbs in the past 9 months so my knees hurt when i try to jog and i run out of breath within about 3 min. I started to walk on the treadmill with the speed of 3.0 the incline at 4.0 to 5.5 I do 60 min which = 3 miles. Is this good? or should i jog to burn more calories=more weight loss? any other tips would be great. thank you in advance

  1. Walking will help. Also, try to get some orthotics to place in your shoes, it will help with the knee pain.

Take a 1/2 hour walk daily, in a week add another 5 to 10 minutes... each week add more. Once you reach an hour, then you can do a slow paced walk for 5 minutes to warm up then a moderate paced walk, run for 1 minute, then walk again... and end it will a slower past walk. Each week add another minute to the running part.

In time your body will be better used to walking and/or running.

Running is not the only cardio you can do. Stationary bike, swimming laps (which is not hard on your joints or bones), epleptical ( I cannot seem to spell that word!) machine... all bring up your cardio. Changing cardio up is a better way to work out anyway.

As well, no amount of exercise will help if you aren't meeting your dietary needs. Don't starve yourself... instead eat 5 to 6 smaller meals throughout the day, watch what you eat and drink 4 to 6 glasses of water per day.

Weight loss should be 1 to 2 pounds per week. Fast weight loss is not only not healthy but ineffective.

  2. Yes, if you walk far enough, are disciplined with your diet, and keep it up for a long time.

An hour at a time is a good start.  As you feel better, start going for longer.

I would suggest getting outside and actually walking in the real world.  Three miles on a treadmill does not take as much effort as three miles in reality.  This is because in the real world - you have to push your body forward.  On the treadmill - you can just move your legs back and forth and let the world pass under you.

Keep it up!!!  Eat less. Stop eating seconds. Stop eating desserts (except for once a week or so for fun).  Eat more vegetables and fruit.  Be disciplined and work out every day if possible - at least five days a week.

Discipline - less food - more activity - you will lose weight.

  3. Yes, it will and is better than jogging anyway, as that jars the metabolism.

But you COULD just jog from one lamp-post to the next. Then walk one or two, then jog another, and so on. It worked for some overweight ppl I know.

  4. Yes, walking will definitely help lose weight. My sister lost 20 lbs this way, although slowly (1 year).  You don't need to job to burn more calories.  I would not even worry about the incline at first.  Just walk but just bring the speed up a little bit at a time.  After you are comfortable walking faster, I would change it to an interval of slow, med, faster over the 1 hour that you walk.  Also, you must change your eating.  I hear to lose weight, what you eat accounts for at least 75%.  Get rid of white carb (cake, donut, plain white rice, white bread and go for veggies and protein and good carbs).

  5. I absolutely endorse what "Paramedic Girl" has told you. Maybe the only change I want to suggest is that you make that 8 glasses of water per day. (Hope I'm not treading on any toes here...)

Please do not even consider starving yourself. It does NOT work and is extremely unhealthy.

    Regards

  6. Any physical activity will help you out.  It is obvious that the higher the impact of the activity, the more calories that will be burned.  This chart looks like it is very handy.  It should help.  Good luck.

  7. The only advice i can give is what worked for me. I started on the treadmill at 4.5 mph and increased the speed 1 10th of a mile every 2 weeks and kept the time at 45 minutes, before i knew it i was jogging then running and the weight melted off.

  8. Start with some brisk walking.  I had gained a lot of weight and couldnt run right off the bat but I started out walking then worked my way up to jogging then to sprinting. It takes time. It took time to get to where you are and it will take time to get back to where you want to be. Just be patient and listen to your body. And remember that the burn is a good thing. It means that what you are doing is working. Work against the burn for as long as you possibly can. Drink plenty of water and eat right.

  9. No. Walking does not burn more calories than standing around talking. But power walking will help you lose weight. See this site under exercise.

Also treadmill does not work since it has its own momentum. It is not the same as walking on ground.

  10. Yes, walking will help you.  Start with 30 minutes at a time, 3+ days a week.  Revise your diet, don't jog if you are out of breath that quickly & your knees hurt.
