I've had the depersonlization since I was 13, first going over my sense of reality - making it hard for me to concintrate or feel at peace throughout the day. Then through my scences - touch, feel, smell ... sight was only effected due to the mental notes - I couldn't see as well because I was viewing from inside myself to my eyes to outside... I've struggled with it for 11 years now. I'm curious if anyone has any suggestions on how to handle it, or otherwise?

My doc blew me off when I said I had it because they don't treat it and have no treatment.

  1. Doctors are better with physical ailments. See section 46 of my website, on depersonalisation, at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris

Gazing at your hands, and the Progressive Muscular Relaxation, as shown in section 2, on page I are likely to help. Also be mindful of the details of your daily activities, as advised by one of the therapists experienced in its treatment, who was a former contributer, here.

Because depersonalisation is often related to anxiety, also see section 6; page N first. It might help, if you can associate any event, or change which occurred in your life prior to, or at the time the depersonalisation started.

Therapy may well be of benefit, but knowing the reason for the depersonalisation would give a better indication of the type which is most likely to be effective quickly, although Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is easy to access.

It can often accomplish all that it is capable of within around 6 months.

  2. I've also had derealization for about 8 years now, starting when I was 16.  I got the same reaction from doctors and I pretty much had to diagnose myself.  I just try to ignore it, which is sometimes easier said than done.  Umm, try hobbies and stay active to keep your mind busy.  I tend to notice it more if I've been sitting around all day doing nothing versus doing things to keep my mind and body active through the day.  I actually went to a psychiatrist one time to talk about it and even though he couldn't help it directly it felt good to let someone know what I have to go through everyday.

Sorry, I haven't really found anything to relieve it at all, but i would love to hear if anyone else has any ideas or what has worked for them.
