I've had surgery on my arm yesterday under local anaesthetic and I feel really down and weepy today - is that normal? also I am meant to be starting a new job in a couple of weeks - it's not that physically demanding but i need to know if I will be up to it - at the moment i am scared to use my arm too much as i've had stitches and I'm worried about it splitting open - am i worrying too much?

  1. Psychological and emotional side effects of anasthesia are totally normal and common---the docs tend not to warn you, though.

A lot of people have depression, sadness, crying jags, etc. in the first few weeks after surgery.

If you really rest a lot, take it easy, eat nutritiously (including lots of protein for healing) you should be fine for your new job.

    Good luck!

  2. Yes it is very normal to feel emotional after anaesthetic.

Keep your arm rested for the next few days - are the stitches dissolvable or will you have them removed? As if so you can ask then when it's safe to use your arm again.

Most people are given a leaflet when they've had minor surgery - there may be some advice in there about how long to rest for, and if not you can always ring the ward (tel no should be on the leaflet too) and ask them directly.
