I've heard that in Australia voting is required and that one can be fined for not voting. Is this true?

I think this would be a great idea. Voting should be viewed as a responsibility, not a privilege.

  1. Yes. It's true. If you don't vote, you get fined. (if they can find you).

  2. I'm not sure about Australia, but it's true here in Chile. It's mandatory to vote in elections if you are between 18-70. If you're over 70, it's optional.

There are some other exemption options, but for the most part, everyone has to vote.

  3. I found a site on the Australia Electoral Commission, you might find it interesting. I think that it should be a responsibility, but only for those who are legally allowed to do so. I'm not sure what it is like there, but I'm pretty sure criminals are not allowed to vote. I read that they charge you a $20 penalty and then it is accrued $50 + court costs after 21 days when they decide to investigate.
