I've just been told about backing a horse to PLACE only. Can anyone out there tell me what this means?

Is Place Only betting just the same as betting Each Way? HELP!!!!

The Tote will take place only bets. I don't know of any other big bookies who do this.

Each way bet is one unit to win, and one unit a place. 1 2 3 or if it's over 16 runners in a handicap 4th place.

In the US, if you bet on a horse to PLACE he needs to come in first or second to cash your ticket.

Betting to SHOW the horse needs to come in first, second or third to cash your ticket.

I wouldn't suggest either in most cases. I have rarely made a place or show wager that really paid alot.

Bet to win, or try an exotic bet (exacta, trifecta, superfecta, daily double, pick 3, pick 4, etc.)

Place betting is generally offered by the tote, if for example you wanted to bet in the 2000 guineas today and you fancied Strike the deal, for example. The horse would need to finish in the first three in that race. The dividend is determined by the pool money in the Tote (Totaliser) and your winnings would be calculated accordingly. You would win the same if it came 1st 2nd or 3rd.

Ps its not quite the same as E/W because it is only one bet as opposed to two. (win and place.)

A £1 each way bet will cost you £2 ie £1 bet to win and £1 bet to place
