Question:

I've just finished a 2 year course, but can't get a job out of it! What other options are there?

I did a BTEC in Countryside Management and got a triple M (worth 3 A levels at B grade) and everywhere I go to to find a job wants volunteer work, but I really can't afford to volunteer for a year without a guaranteed job out of it.

I didn't want to go to uni, which is why I did the course in the first place, but now I can't see any other choice, unless I get a completely unrelated job, which would defeat the object of me doing the course in the first place!

Any suggestions would be gratefully received - should I risk a year of volunteering? Or go to university and risk 3 years and a lot of money?

  1. Go to university, a 2 year degree in the U.S. doesn't mean much either. What employers want to see is the 4 year degree or whatever is equivalent in your country. Also pick a degree that you're going to get a job in, like don't choose a philosophy degree. Lots of people hate college, I do too but sometimes you have to do things you don't like to get to where you want to get. Good luck.

  2. Maybe volunteer 1/2 time (20 hours per week) and maybe work a part time job on the side (20-30 hours) that pays. This will get you the experience in your area while still allowing you to bring in income.

  3. Join the club. I studied hard for three years at college, got perfect qualifications, but still find it difficult to land myself a job relative to them, its hard. I would say you should seek a recruitment agency in your local area, this is what I have done. You will be given a recruitment consultant who will help you find suitable employment in the field of work you want, of course you'll need to fill out some forms and maybe tested on your skills, then once you are registered, they help you get work. Honestly, I went the other day and they were so good, they give you tips on your CV and skills and stay in contact with you. xx

    Good luck xx
