We have agreed to expand the house by enlarging our bedrooms to adjoin to a screened in porch. But my half there is an old ugly tree and she does not want to cut this down. I've thought about doing it myself while she's at the store..but I think that would really cause problems between us. I love my Sister..I don't understand her obsession with this tree. What can I do? There is just no other way to build..and she's got it in her head that we can build around this thing. I'm open for suggestions.

Hope you do not mind a little fun.  One thing that may work is tell her she can have the side where the tree is. You keep the other side. Heck she could even build a tree house for herself.

If you both agreed to take on this project then why can't you both sit down and have a meeting of the minds to try and resolve this issue over a tree, that's foolishly holding you both back from expanding and going to cause hard feeling. Is it worth it?

You bet it would cause problems, dont be a sneaky snake. You say there is a porch, I dont know what it looks like but there are lots of ways to build around trees or actually incorporate them into your reconstruction design, I've seen these personally and they're very attractive and unique, think tree house or log cabin, of course it helps if its a nice tree, check it out in some deck and porch books,,,,,,millions of ideas for it
