I've never golfed before, would I be ok just setting up a tee time and giving it a shot?

My apartment complex has a golf course that I can go play golf at really cheap. I've never played before (unless you count wii golf) so I'm worried if I just show up and start hitting balls around I'm going to break a bunch of rules and make all the other players mad. I was thinking about going when it wasn't busy then I just need to hit the balls into the hole right?

  1. It would not be a good idea.  Get out to the practice range first and hit a couple buckets of balls with someone who knows the game.   Then find at least one other player before you make a tee time and hit the course.

Once on the course, be courteous.  If you see you are holding up a group behind you, wait on the next tee box and invite them to go ahead of you (its called "playing thru").  If you do that, you'll always be welcome on the course no matter what your skill level.

  2. No - you won't  have much fun, and other around you won't either.  Golf takes some time to learn (like maybe a year) so you need to take a few lessons, practice at a driving range so you can hit the ball, learn the rules and etiquette of the game and then you could try it.

  3. i think that you should give it a shot. Thats how i started to golf just practicing at a driving range. O and by the way i think that it is awesome that girls golf. Once you get good dont let guys get to you either. were just as good as them!!! ;-)

  4. Right!

I would recommend having someone go with you that has went before tho. Golf is a somewhat complicated game.

You need to know what clubs to use, technique, etc. Be Careful

  5. Just go, it is still a sport, and sports were made to have fun and enjoy life, be like NIKE and Just do it.

  6. Hi,Just go for it,smack some balls, you might like it.It does put you in a different frame of mind when you play golf.Enjoy.

  7. It would really p**s me off.  I'd stick the club up your a*ss.

  8. Sure, but its harder than it looks. If you have patience, then go. But if you don't go to the driving range first, then play. Golf is'nt that fun when you don't know how to play it though, its frustrating. Good Luck !

  9. i'm sorry to say this but the answer is no. it's not wrong at all to want to take up golfing but it is wrong to just walk on a course . i think all people should learn how to drive hit a iron and most of all chip very important. my advice and please take it go to a driving andpractice these skills it will make yours and every one elses round much nicer.

  10. NEVER!!! Before you ever venture on the course make sure you know something about the game, the etiquette you require and the well being of those who enjoy the game and play by the rules. To go out without any knowledge  will only aggregate others. Take some lessons. Learn to hit a ball decently. Then , if the course is empty go to an adjacent hole , hit some shots  and practice chipping and putting.

  11. Hey ya go out threre and play. Ya sure you will break the rules and frustrate other golfers but if they are that impatient and really need to get somewhere let them go by you. Also if it is your first time just remember one ball of the tee, follolow the ball (if its findable), then keep on hitten twords the hole. GOOD LUCK!

  12. For your pleasure and others, please don't do it.

Golf is a fairly time-consuming game, and when you don't know how to play (which is true of everyone before they practice), it only adds a ton of time to the round. I've never seen a complete newbie enjoy a round of golf when they've never hit a golf ball before.

I recently played a round with a very new player, and a player who had never tried golf at all before. It was very frustrating for me and my partner, as it took us more than 3 hours to play nine holes (it should take between 1 1/2 and 2 1/4 hours to play nine holes).

It will also be very frustrating for you, and many people get very nervous when people are watching them and they can't perform well.

The best way for you to enjoy yourself and be courteous to others is to practice some before you go. Getting a few basic lessons from a local golf professional will also be a great way to begin well and get started with good habits. Then, you will develop a swing that is at least somewhat consistent, and you will lose fewer balls, be less frustrated on course, and cause less of a slow-down for the other players. Also, the website www.About.com has an area of the site where you can learn about golf. Knowing the rules of golf before playing will help a lot. I've found this site to be a great source for learning. Also, check out www.TheGolfChannel.com. They have all sorts of video clips and articles for instruction. Pay particular attention to the short game tips, as that's where you will spend most of your time.

Please, please, get into the game. It's a wonderful, fun, enjoyable, rewarding game. But taking a few preparatory steps first will make a world of difference.

  13. Do you have any friends that golf? Ask them to take you to chip and putt or a driving range first and then get on a course.

  14. Eeek!  Go get some lessons first.  This game is a whole lot more difficult than you think.  At least go to the driving range and hit a few (hundred) balls and talk to someone about golf etiquette.

  15. You need to have a clue of what you're doing, so I wouldn't do it until I made a visit to a driving range.  It looks easy, but it isn't.  You need to know how to hold the club properly before you play.

  16. To start with, just go straight to the green and putt.

It is less obvious when you make mistakes and so less embarrassing.

There is a big advantage to this.

When you do start swinging at the tee, other players you are with won't expect too much from you, and then you kill them on the green - sweet revenge.

PUTTING: start putting from 3 feet to the hole - when you get more ins than misses, go to 5 feet.

then when you putt from 20 to 30 feet away, you are not aiming to get into the hole ... all you want is to get about 3 feet away and you know you are likely to get it in next shot.

If you get pretty good, other golfers would notice you and give you good tips for swinging.

(the hard thing about long hits it that you want the ball to go straight, but the club is going in an arc or circle - that makes it easy to make mistakes and hit the ball onto the next fairway - other golfers don't like balls hitting them for some strange reason. Get some tips and practice before going onto the first tee)

  17. You should be fine but maybe head to the driving range and hit a couple buckets of balls before you head to the first tee? Hint: for the first time playing you are going to hit some really bad shots and maybe even miss the ball a time or 2. Don't get discouraged!!! Its a frustrating game but in the end result it will be your love!

just my 2 cents, have fun ;  )

  18. HECK YEA!! i don't think anything is wrong with going and trying something new. if you wear argyle socks and capris pants you will probably do better....if you are worried about golf snobs getting pissed at you, mini golf is a fun alternative. especially the courses with a storybook theme...you should still wear the socks and pants but add a nice hat and probably a flask or two. leave the golf buggy at home for this adventure though.

    HAPPY SWINGIN!!
