Question:

I've never had a credit card, and live with my parents as a collage student. Any credit cards I should see?

I'm mainly looking to raise my credit score, but it needs to be with something that I'll be able to use frequently and with good benefits. I don't expect to ever fail to pay on time, so bad backlash there may not be much of a concern... but I'm not foolish enough to think it could never happen, so I still want to know the details. Any recommendations/links to places with recommendations? thanks!

  1. obviously, the best cards are the rewards cards that pay you a % back.

    Possibilities:

Discover (although still not accepted in alot of places)

Chase Rewards (I seem to get a $50 check every 2 - 3 months because of the bonus points).

CitiRewards (I used to use this one more often, but stopped because Chase paid more)

Universal Card (This is a good card, too - but I had to get gift cards instead of cash - and I always ended up with a pocket full of gift cards with a few bucks left on them).

    What's important?

    1)  no fees

    2) Grace period payment with no interest

    3)  25 days grace period (this is starting to close up a bit)

www.bankrate.com has more credit card offers, where you can key in your particulars and it recommends cards based on your needs.

  2. You need to choose:  Do you want a high FICO score, or do you want to become rich?

If you want a FICO score, then get a card or three, and build up your credit, so that you can borrow more money later on.

If you want to become rich, then never get a credit card, save a tenth of what you earn, and stockpile it.

  3. I suggest getting a credit card with either Capital Onc or HSBC

    www.capitalone.com

    www.hsbc.com

Both are good at giving credit to young adults, just like yourself!

Also, apply for student cards, like a B of A student card, they really don't care about FICO scores...

    www.americanexpress.com

    www.discovercard.com

    www.usbank.com

    www.wachovia.com

    www.wamu.com

All of these are good CC companies!

Hope mine was the best answer...hint..hint!!  =]]

  4. I'd say don't get one.. if I could go back to age 18 and change only ONE thing about my life, it would seriously be never getting a credit card. Those things can ruin your life. Stay with your parents, stay in school, stay out of debt, save whatever money you can, and forget about credit cards until you have a real job with good money and benefits. If you want to establish credit, finance a car with a loan and pay it off early.

  5. I got my first credit card when I was in college.  It was a student credit card and I believe I had a $1500 limit when it was opened.  The APR was 13%, and I actually still have the card even though I'm no longer a student.

I researched different types of cards and decided that a student card would be easier to get than lets say a frequent flyer miles card.

I ended up picking Citi Cards and they actually called my school and verified my enrollment.  I think that is their main 'credit check' for first time credit card applicants.

It's easy to compare credit cards when you can see everything they offer.  You can use the following site to compare student cards. Plus you can apply for cards there as well!

  6. Do you have any income? That's usually the first step toward getting a credit card.

The second step is going to your bank and filling out an application. Have you tried that yet?

  7. http://www.respectcreditcards.com can help you find a great card with no annual fee and low interest rate.
