  1. Wait until you take a few lessons before buying anything.  Your surf instructor will recommend the size board you should get.  Also, most surf schools, mine included, have agreements with local shops for deals on boards etc.  Surf school boards here are usually soft top.  You don't want to buy one of those, just use it to learn on.  The size of board you get will depend primarily on how much you weigh.

  2. short board its easier to control

  3. usually at the surf camps they provide the boards for you and when they are done they give you advice on what board to get

  4. Usually, here in Hawaii (don't know about other places) the surf instructors provide the surfboards for the pupils.  Therefore, you don't have to worry about what kind of board to use when taking lessons here.  Nevertheless, I would recommend taking lessons from someone who provides the surfboard.

You should only consider buying a board after you have tried surfing and really want to get into it.  Keep in mind, not everyone who tries surfing, likes it.  There are many things that are involved in surfing that you must learn and contend with that some people find frustrating when learning and eventually give up.  I don't want to sound negative, but surfing is like any other sport so you have to first of all realize that you are a beginner and that you will have to work in order to improve.  But, you will know right away whether you like surfing or not and want to continue with it.

If you end up liking it and would like to continue with your own board, I would strongly recommend a long board to start with.   Your boards will shorten as you get better.  Keep in mind that the longer boards are easier to paddle and are more stable.  The ease of paddling and stablity are reduced as you go shorter, but the ability to manuever increases as you go shorter.

Good luck, I hope you enjoy it because if you do, it will open up new doors in your life and will be time well spent with no regrets.

  5. i would totally recommend learning on a longboard.  depending on how tall you are will depend on the size of the board.  I would say a 9-10 foot board should be perfect to learn on!

  6. Yeah, your instructor should provide a board.

But if you are just starting, you're much better off getting a long board. Talk to someone at a local surf shop for them to specify and point out the best board for you and what conditions you'll be surfing under (how often you'll surf, your height and weight, etc.)

Good luck, I've never taken lessons, but I hear they aren't too bad.

    =P

  7. No, a Short board is not easier to control, it is easier for tricks though. You might want to learn on a Longboard, try renting one or maybe your instructor will lend you one. If you can try to go with a soft-top (foam top) they are the least slippery and they are a lot safer for learning. Also, you could try a Fun board. Don't buy anything until you can at least stand and ride a wave. Be patient with surfing and Have fun.

also look for surfing books, they have lots of tips when buying a board and be carefull with buying a used board if you don't know what to look for!!!

    Hang-lose!!!!!

  8. The body board is the easiest, I enjoyed body/skim boarding for five years until I could afford my own surf board in 1970. The long boards are hard to turn and manuver until you matured in life. Go to a local surf shop, and ask if they provide lessons, and they normally provide the surf boards, and choose the board that is comfortable to your height, and weight and character. A radical surfer would buy a short board and a cruizer or elderly would buy the long boards.

  9. a ruler. or a coffee table.

  10. long thick wide board ti learn try inside sets first
