Ive been playing modified volleyball(7th and 8th grade) for 2 years now, in 7th grade I sucked and was a sub. This year (8th grade) I was a lot better and played on the B team(2nd best team basicaly) and I was the first server. Next year I really really want to play JV but I need to make overhand serves because I think that it would give me an upperhand to my acceptance to the team. Any advice to overhand serve?

  1. overhand serving is something that you'll get used to after practicing it.  what helps me a lot is the timing of when you hit the ball, swinging forward with my hand, and keeping a firm pulled back hand so it hits the ball with more force.

  2. Just take one or two steps behind the ball when it is in the air. this will help with the power and hit it when it reaches where your hand is and hit it hard. i am also trying out for volleyball in ninth grade next year and would like to make JV. i hope i helped this is what i do and i'm one of my teams best servers.

P.S. make sure you have enough room to take your steps. or you will foot fault. BAD!!

  3. I'd take a look at this question asked just the other day...

  4. Serving overhand is very important to being on a JV team.  Your toss is very important.   You have to have a good toss each time and in order to get a good toss you need to keep practicing.  Then you need a quick arm swing and follow through.  Make good contact with the ball.  Practice your toss alone first, then when you have it where you want it practice hitting the ball.  Practice makes perfect.

  5. Purchase a cheap practice volleyball or ask your parents to buy you one...

These can be used outside on any hard surface. Find a nearby wall you can spike serve against.

Practice spike serving - using a fast elbow movement to deliver a fast serve. Add the wrist movement upon contact with the volleyball (this will cause the volleyball to spin over the net). You do not need to throw up the ball to serve it (just hold it high and hit it like that).

Jumping is only for spiking practice - same for moving forward into it.

With regular practising - you can build up your muscles and confidence - so that you can spike it extremely fast.

Be sure to do the first few slowly at first, so that you warm up your muscles gradually. This will avoid muscle problems.

  6. well when i was in 4th grade i couldn't get my over and serve over but then my cousin told me to use all of my power and just swing straight and then don't swing all the way through just swing until halfway. it really help i promise you because  by 5th grade i made it over my coach was so proud of me and yours will be also!
