  1. it's ' photographer ' Lol, but that's besides the point.

These cameras are pretty evenly matched, they both has two and a half inch screens, ten megapixels, and each costs around the same. So, which one you buy depends on which brand you personally favor, because none of these are better than the other, the are the same. However, in my case, i'm a Nikon DSLR owner, so of course i'll tell you to go with Nikon. If you get the Nikon d60, you could get a 50mm f/1.8 lens too. They are both great cameras. Also, you can get  the 50mm f/1.8 lens with both brands, the Canon brand one is cheaper though. Also, the d60 is much newer than the 2006 released 400d, so you might want to get the d60 just because of that. The newer version of the 400d is the 450d:

However, it's two hundred dollars more expensive. I'd get the Nikon d60 though, it's a newer camera. However, if you like Canon by all means go for it, These cameras are almost identical.

  2. I use the canon 40d, which is a step up from  canon eos 400d which I was going to buy but they were out of stock

  3. These are pretty much identical cameras. You'll probably be happy with either one. My suggestion is to go into a store and hold them both and try fooling around with the buttons and menus. Whichever one feels better is the one you should get.

Since you're into portraits if you do get the Canon you should look into the 50mm f/1.8 or the 50mm f/1.4. The f/1.8 costs $100 and gives great images. Its downside is that it feels very cheap and plasticy. The f/1.4 costs a little more ($350) but is a stellar lens in terms of image quality and build quality.
