if you are month to month (no longer under contract), threaten to switch to DishNetwork and they will give you one for free w/ mail in rebate.  You will however need to agree to a 2 year contract. If you're already locked in you won't get much of a deal.  Or you can buy one on ebay, but make sure it's somebody that has a strong rating as you will need them to call DirecTV to notify that they sold the system in order for them to activate (I suppose to prevent stolen receivers from being activated)

Good luck with that. I tried to upgrade my DVR after 2 years and they told me there would be a $99 charge. I went to Dish Network and got screwed over by them to the tune of $500 or so. If I could go back and do it again I would just pay the $99 to upgrade w/ Direct.
