  1. If you're wiring a pool pump it's probably 240V. The cable run is usually a 10/3 or an 8/3 cable and will have 4 wires:

      L1 (hot) - black

      L2 (hot) - red

      N (neutral) - white

G (ground) - green or bare copper.

Some motors don't have neutral, only L1, L2 and ground. Check the motor connection diagram.

The motor L1 and L2 leads go to the timer switch, the neutrals and grounds get tied together. Ground also connects to the box using the grounding s***w provided.

If you're at all unsure about this, call an electrician.

  2. Black is 'hot"--- other colors can be also -- like red, blue, orange, etc. , BUT not green.

Green is the ground ----equipment ground.

Bare copper wire is the "normal" ground.

White is the nuetral  wire --- this carries the" return voltage "back , but can still shock you ---- so be careful --- it can still hurt/kill you.

In some installations -- a white wire will be a "hot" wire --- this wire should have a black marking toward the end of it --- like black tape wrapped around the end , or black marker paint -- showing that it's "hot"
