  1. It depends on the kind of responsibility you want with kids and what you are most passionate about.  Ask yourself: Do you love working with kids (either one-on-one or in a group), or do you want to work for kids (like in an organization that helps them)?  Do you want to interact with kids on a daily basis, or do you only want to be in the same building with them and see them in the hallway or in your office once in a while?

There are many positions outside of teaching that still works with kids and in education.  Have you looked into any non-profit organizations that work for kids?  Maybe you can find different volunteer positions in education and try them out.  The best way to know for sure is to try it and see if it sparks anything in you.  It is hard to read about positions and really get a good idea of what you would be doing. I would also suggest asking if you could observe someone in their position for a few hours or a day, and then read more about it if it seems interesting.

Don't feel like you have to know exactly what you want.  Sometimes opportunities present themselves in weird places and sometimes it takes you in a completely different direction!  Good luck.  :)

PS. I am a public school teacher, and I had to take different paths for a year to realize that I wanted to be in the classroom!  Sometimes it is just fear or uncertainty that holds us back, but eventually you will come back to it if it is truly what you want.

I think you should take some Career Exploration quizzes to find which one suits you the most. Then research that career... salary, nature of the work, etc. It's helpful to think about what kind of lifestyle you want to live and where you'll be living. You can research careers and find the median salary of that particular state. Find videos demonstrating what the "daily life of ______" is like too. I suggest that you intern or volunteer and those jobs too. Good luck!!

And remember that you can always switch your major during college. Right before I chose my college I switched from Veterinary medicine to a Dentist :P
