I heard about a box that I could buy with a stateside carrier and people could call me like they were calling a local number, but I don't know how to find it. Are there any other ways?

  1. If you really want to stay in touch face to face with loved ones in the states, we have a video phone that enables us to see other family members who also have a video phone. The best is we can also leave a video message- so we are not stuck in front of the computer.

www.YourLife4u.acnrep.com   click on the products icon, then to the right is digital video phone service.

    We love it!!!!

  2. check  www.magicjack.com

works well and is much more compact

  3. If you don't want to use a PC for your VoIP calls, then you can buy a user configurable VoIP ATA box that is not locked to any particular SIP-based VoIP service.

For example, the Linksys SPA-2102-NA is a combo NAT-Router + 2-Line ATA VoIP box.  You configure it for whatever VoIP service that allows BYOD (bring your own device).  That is what I do.

I connect to VoIP services like CallCentric and InPhonex.  They are BYOD, no contracts, and only Pay-As-You-Go.

With CallCentric and InPhonex, you can purchase local area code phone numbers (DID's) in any area code of your choice so that family and friends in those area codes can call you for free.

You can also use these services from your PC with their free downloadable softphones.  With the CallCentric softphone, you can call from your PC (with headset and microphone) to anywhere in USA/Canada for only 1.98 cent/min.

  4. almost all of our personnel use the MagicJack to call back to the US for free with an US are-code!

also the GI's in Iraq use the MJ now!!

you just buy the device log on and get your US phone number, register it, and take it with you....you can use it anywhere there is high-speed Internet!

the MJ device is 39.99 and the service is 19.99 per year...most of use use a mini flip-phone with it, but you also can use the softpad like skype.

  5. Try out http://www.jajah.com

It's quite cheap for calling UK so i guess it's also for the US

  6. Have you considered getting a Vonage device with an US number?

I can take my vonage device anywhere in the world and connect it to the internet and make a phone call.
