This is a math riddle with no answer....or is there one?

3 guys check into a hotel. They each pay the clerk 10 dollars. They go back to their room and the clerk figures out he made a mistake and the room should have cost only 25 dollars and not 30 dollars. So the clerk takes 5 dollars and gives each guy a dollar back and tips the bellboy 2 dollars.

How much did each guy pay now? 9 dollars right?

3 x 9 = 27...2 to the bellboy....29 dollars total

Where did the other dollar go?

Actually, you did your math wrong, but here's a good one for you. Instead of giving the bellboy two dollars, he gave him one dollar and split the last dollar between each customer. 1/3 of one=.33 right? Right, so he gives each person 33 cents. But 33x3 is only 99. Where is the extra penny?

It went nowhere, there's still 30 dollars:

30 paid

25 actual price, so gives each guy 1 dollar and keeps 2 as tip.

25 + 3 + 2 = 30

You don't multiply, you're supposed to subtract 2 from 27, which gets 25, the actual price, and 30 - 25, is 5, which is the amount that the bellboy gets after finding out they overpaid.

Here's where you're wrong.  Those guys NEVER pay $30.

They were only paying 3 x $9.00 = $27.00

The room was ONLY $25

The tips to the bellboy $2

Total Bill = $27 -> that's what those guys pay.

The clerk ripped those 3 guys off, he should have just given them each one third of 5 dollars.  

That money was not rightfully his so he shouldn't' have tipped the bellboy with it.

I think that the clerk should pay for the room out of his own pocket because of his own grievous mistake.  It is only polite.
