  1. try running "chckdsk"

  2. boot to safe mode and check if you can see drivers on My computer.

Right click on "My Computer" and choose "Properties". Click on the "Hardware" tab and then on the "Device Manager" button. Are there any devices in the list that are marked with a yellow ? If yes, install the drivers for the same.

Can you see the pendrive when you plug it in.

Goto RUN, type services.msc and check if these services are not disabled

    Logical Disk Manager

    Shell Hardware Detection.

Right click on My computer and click on "manage"

choose Computer management and under it Disk management...and check if your C: drive is the primary.

Disable any malicious software running at startup by typing msconfig at RUN and going to the start up tab.

Goto RUn box again and type "CMD" which would open the Command prompt ....type "cd\"

now you should just see c:\   type "dir/a" at this C: propmpt

check if you see any file like autorun.inf or b.com or t.com.

if yes just delete them using this comand "del autorun.inf"

if it does not delete just use this command "del /f autorun.inf" and same for b.com and t.com

try and also run "sfc /scannow" from the command prompt....you need to be the Admin for this and also need the XP cd.

please backup registry before this..google it to know how

Method below is for CDROMs/DVDROmS only

    goto RUN, type  "regedit"

    browse to this path

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

    \SYSTEM

    \CurrentControlSet

    \Control

    \Class

    \{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318...

just higlight the last key if it says DVD/CDROM on the right then you are f9...delete upper and lower filter from the right.

Registry edit for your hard drive below.

goto regedit , browse by clicking on the + signs and go to

    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curren...

on the right pane double click on  NoDriveTypeAutoRun it will open a small window asking you to input a value choose hexadecimal value  and input  FF or choose decimal and input 255. We do this to disable autoplay on your drives so that no malicious code is auto started on double clicking.

Scan your drive for infections.Download hijack this (google it)  to fix registry problems.

show all hidden files from folder options and just check if you find any malicious or suspicious file.

    hope this helps™

  3. Try this:

Get the "Tweak UI" free tool from Microsoft

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/Downl...

Install it, launch it, open the My Computer section.

Click the Drives item. If any of the boxes are unchecked, check them and click OK.

    If NO boxes are un-checked, un-check C: D:and E:, click Apply, re-check C: D: and E:, click OK.
