  1. I've never heard of a surfing camp, new one on me...

rent, borrow or buy yourself a board, Paddle out just past where the waves are breaking.Find one thats ready to break, paddle with it and off you go! Just lay down and ride the first couple of times, then try standing up. get a board with a leash so the board cant get to far away from you. Find friends with a simular interest they can help you a bunch.

  2. Dont worry about fitting out of place, i didnt start surfing until i was twelve ( im 16 now by the way) but i new a guy, so I was able to surf w/ him. if you are at a beach, there are going to be too many people around to want to pay attention to just you. Speaking in terms of prices, i really dont know, but you could probably get good lessons cheap.

    hope i helped!!

  3. 1.  There will be plenty of kids your age so you will be just one of the new surfers

    2.  Playing sports may help you a little.  The most important thing for you to do as far as sports goes is to be able to swim well.  You'll be able to tell if it's something you like or not pretty fast.  When I was a kid first surfing (about 100 years ago) I lived on the beach in Oceanside.  Once I got out there a few times, fell, fell and fell somemore and finally got a small wave I was hooked. It's one of those sports that you can be as good as you want to be.  Everytime you paddle out and catch a wave you getting better and learning.

    3.  I know there are surf camps in San Diego and LaJolla but I have no idea how much they cost.

Maybe put some time into skating around before spending the bucks on the camp.  If you like skating you'll like surfing as long as you are good in the water and not afraid to get crunched by waves sometimes.

You may want to just find a buddy that can already surf and ask him.  Surfers are normally good about helping out kids that want to learn.  Maybe just go down to one of the beaches near you with one of your parents and talk to some of the older guys or go with them to a local surf shop.

Surfboards are pretty expensive so you don't want to go right out and buy a pricey board.  I surfed for 3 years before I ever owned a custom board.  And it was over $100 then and that was in the 60's.

Here is a link that will give you camp info

Good luck.  If you love it the way most surfers do it will be part of you forever.

  4. Surf camps vary. Try to find one that you will feel comfortable with. Don't be ashamed of surfing with little kids. Once you do start surfing, you will be surfing with people of all ages. Part of the surfing experience is to be with people who also share the same passion. Prices will vary on what the camps are offering and how many participants will be attending.

The most difficult part of surfing is not the standing up, it's the paddling. Being in shape and athletic helps but you will be utilizing your upper body a lot more than you ever have. Even swimmers have a hard time adapting to the paddling aspect of surfing. Like any other sport, it will take time to get used to what you are doing. It takes practice.

try not to be too self conscious. Everyone had to start somewhere and everyone fell off their boards (and still do). Just enjoy yourself, enjoy the time you get to spend in the water. Good luck.

  5. First...If yOu WanT PeOple To TaKe YouR QuesTioN SerIoUs Do'Nt tYPe LikE An IdioT.  Yes, surfing is hard but it's also fun.  If you don't have friends that are willing or able to teach you a camp is a decent way to go.  Expect to shell out a couple hundred dollars for a week of half day lessons.

Second.  To the person who wrote the following ".my 17 year old daughter was doing what they call 'Tantric Surfing"(that is surfing with 2 persons on the board..being lifted up onto his shoulders and into a standing position all done while riding a wave...pretty impressive I might add.."  It's called "tandem" surfing.  Tantric surfing would be something like having karma sutra s*x on a surfboard.  And while it would still probably be impressive, my guess it is not something you would want to watch your daughter do.

  6. It is never too late to start surfing!! I say go for it surf camps are usually for all ages it might seem a little awkward at first but as long as you respect surfers better than you no matter the age they will respect you the more athletic you are the easier it makes it yes but surfing is like no other sport out there it's a soul sport (you will understand as soon as you catch your first wave  cost varies for camp to camp I'd start with a lesson to see if you want to pursue a more expensive camp good luck! Hang loose!!

  7. I think one of the best ways to learn is with a friend that surfs.  Thats how I initially learned.  Didn't cost a thing, and learned a lot of local spots.

  8. We also live in California...but the only time we Surf is when we are in Hawai'i since we live in Central Cali....where the closest Beach is over 90 miles away and COLD...I really couldn't tell you anything about Surf Camps...me nor my 3 kids have ever been to one....but if you are close to one I say give it a shot...If it is a paid camp then I'm sure they will have young men your age grouped together along with what I would say your Skill Level...You're an Athlete already just as my 14 year old son is(Football & Wrestling)and he was Riding the waves within a half an hour(standing and riding until the wave gave out) right along with his 12 year old sister...now that was with Instruction from one of the Foremost Top Surfers in Hawai'i....with the skills YOU ALREADY possess AS an Athlete(good Hand-Eye Coordination,Balance and DETRMINATION) you will learn quickly and I would say Easily...my 17 year old daughter was doing what they call 'Tantric Surfing"(that is surfing with 2 persons on the board..being lifted up onto his shoulders and into a standing position all done while riding a wave...pretty impressive I might add..)and she was doing this within a couple of hours of her lessons...(she has been a Stunter/Flyer in cheer for 8 years, so that helped out.) (smile)... I'm sorry I really couldn't give you any more Information on Camps...but you will be fine and I'm certain do very well with this Sport...Aloha Cali Boy!!! Have Fun out there and Be Careful...especially with "dropping-in" on other Surfers...they don't like that much...you'll find out what that means when you get out therel!

  9. 1. It doesen't matter how old you are, you're there just to have fun. And it doesen't matter what people think.

    2. I played sports and still surfed. Then again, what has that got to do with surfing?

All of my friends that surfed with me all played sports. We all played high school sports, football, basketball, baseball, track, Judo, swimming. It doesen't matter what sport you play, in fact, it could help you. Build up your upper body strength, breathing, and over all health.

  10. I didn't "surf" till I was 13 (that was 42 years ago!), but, I was an experienced ocean swimmer. So, if you are a fair Athlete, and get to be at home in the ocean, you will surely be able to learn. There are even surf camps that are designed for adults, so don't worry that you are too old. You might have to look harder to find one. I'm sure that a surf shop could refer to one. I see ads in the surf magazines all the time, so they are out there. I am a fan of people who start surfing without lots of ocean experience taking lessons, so even if the whole "camp: idea doesn't work out, go to a good surf shop, and talk to the folks there about individual or group lessons. Be sure you go to a real surf shop, not a bathing suit store that sells surfboards. I don't have a clue what it costs, but lessons and board rental together can't be all that expensive. Learn your way around the ocean and learn to swim strongly, and get some lessons. Surfing, if you learn to appreciate the ocean and be courteous while surfing, is the greatest stoke of all, so go for it.

  11. It depends. There could be different age groups. But when I went, there was 12 year-olds, 13 and 14. There are some little kids, but they wont get in your way.

If you are already in good shape, I think you would be good at surfing.

I am not sure. Try your local church, my surk camp was FREE!

    Good Luck!

  12. nice

  13. #1 You can find surf camps with kids your own age, so I don't think you'd have to feel out of place.

#2 Yes. Surfing is hard, but well worth the difficulty. In the right conditions with a good board, you could be standing up on the insides your first day. The great thing about surfing is that you'll be having as much fun surfing the small inside waves as the experienced surfers are having on the outside. Maybe even more fun since there is nothing quite like catching your first waves.

Cost depends on location and leaders. There are lot's of surf camps in CA, HI and as remote as you want to get.

  14. 1- yes, surfing camps would be your best bet, however, most camps requires some knowledge.

2-No, if you already do other sports it will become easier as you already agile.

3-Some community schools will charge between $50-$80 dolls. per day. You should learn within a day or two-at least the basics.

  15. Well, if you live in Cali, you should definately take the opportunity to jump into a camp.  Most of the camps here in Hawaii are day camps, so you just spend the day surfing and then come back the next day.  I'm not sure how it is out there.  But go for it!

When I was 14, I was playing football and baseball.  And I still got tired when I went surfing.  Obviously, if you play sports, you have to be athletic.  Surfing requires you to use different muscles than softball and basketball use.  So you'll probably be sore your first day because you won't have your "surf muscles" yet.  And the best way to develop these muscles, is just to go surf!

It's well worth it.  You'll fall in love with it.  Guarantee.  Good luck!!!

  16. 1. there may be little kids, and it depends on you whether you think you will be out of place, if so, then encourage a mate to go with you.

2.Seeing as you live in CA you will be able to practise alot and so it will be RELATIVELY easy, but surfing requires a lot of commitment and training.

I say if you dont want to go to a surf camp/ can't afford it then just hire out some softboards, go down to a mellow break (look online for smaller breaks around CA) making sure there are lifeguards, or other surfers there; and just give it a go, you'll get a feel for it indefinately. Try and get 1 if not a few lessons though as it helps to have some initial guidance. I hope this helped!
