Okay, so my hamster has been lost for a maximum of five months. He was incredibly nice. He never bit, and he loved to be held. But after I lost him I thought he'd died. Turns out he didn't, and I found him this morning while I was sitting at the computer desk. He was running at my feet, looking for food I guess.

But Now I've got him in a large tub with food and bedding. I can't put any water in it yet since A: I tried putting a small container in there, and he only dumped it everywhere, and B: A regular water holder wouln't stay put. I want to know how to tame him since he's most likely rouge.

Note: I'll be getting a cage later on today.

PLEASE HELP.

  1. Feed him out of your hand, Sit by his cage for an hour or so a day, put socks and cloths that smell like you in his cage. Talk to him when you pass by his cage, and get him used to you.

  2. if u want to tame him, introduce ur hand first, wear a glove if u have to, then pick him up, its ok if he bites you a little, then try feeding him some food, do this everydfay for 10 minutes and no more than 30

in a few weeks he will like you...

  3. Use gloves when handeling him right now.  Thick ones so that he can bite you all he wants and it won't hurt you so you will have no reaction.  After a while he will see biting doesn't work.  Put some food in your hand also while your starting to hold him again.  Once he stops biting the glove you can try using your bare hand.  Just do the usual washing first so he won't smell food on you.  You may also try putting hand sanitizer on right before so your hands will smell and taste of alcohol so he won't want to bite it.  Not too much though, just a normal amount.  Whenever you go to hold him also say his name and talk real calm and let him know you are there before you just yank him up out of the cage.  I'm sure you already know most of this stuff though but the glove thing worked for my hamster when I got him and he wasn't tame.  Good luck.

  4. He has been free and "wild" for a while - he isn't going to go back in a matter of seconds. Just work with him for a bit and he will remember who you are and how nice you were to him.

We find escapies all the time at work. We have to keep them in the wellness room to keep an eye on them  no telling what they got into on their outing and to kind of bring them back to being a nice pet reality.

I would put the bowl of water back in their so he has something, or give him some lettuce so he can get the moisture from that.

Keep an eye on him too... no telling what he got into while he was out, and although he may seem fine at this second, if he got into anything that can harm him you may not see it for a couple days (although he has been out for 5 months!! haha... but just in case.)

As far as taming - do what you did when you first got him. This will reminde him of who you are.

  5. same happens to me alot but never that long.. after they don't let me pick them up like i use to i take a toilet paper roll and scoop the hamster up with it and drop my hammy in my hand. hope this helped!
