  1. Yes, it can be done. However, if you are just looking to increase the fuel mileage of your truck, it's really not worth it when you consider the time and cost to make the swap. You might instead consider adding an aftermarket over/under drive auxiliary unit such as those made by Gearvendors. They will increase fuel economy as well as giving you more gear ratios to choose from. If you are dead set on a diesel though, it can and has been done.

    Good luck.

  2. Sure you can...It would be really costly and time consuming....The Duramax is a great motor and the Allison tranny is also good..You,ll have alot of electrical to deal with...

  3. you could,

but it will probably be cheaper just to go get one that already has a diesel, if you want to stay with the 80s body style

in those years it was the 6.2 liter non-turbo diesel

after 93 it changed to the 6.5 liter turbo diesel

and in 2000 the changed to the 6.6 liter duramax turbo diesel

  4. You can do it but it is pretty extensive, expensive and may not be emission legal. Example: California requires biennial smog inspections, the Department of Motor Vehicles has the vehicle on record as a gasoline powered truck VIN # N engine (7.4L HD emissions). The DMV will send out a notice to get the vehicle smogged. A smog station cannot approve the change. The State has to approve any engine changes or conversions through a contracted referee system. Engine changes from gas to diesel and diesel to gas are not approved.

So you might look into your state laws to determine whether it would be do-able for you. Take into consideration the dependability of the vehicle after the engine swap, I mean, if it is done well it can be dependable if not, expect break-downs.

  5. Yes, but I only recommend it if your changing the motor anyway.  Also, you may have trouble if your state requires a emissions check, they don't like it when the vehicle says it has one engine, but really has the other.

  6. You could but it will not be that easy or cheap, and I am not that sure why you would want to.
