Question:

I HAVE TO PAY FINE BECAUSE OF PAY-PAL'S ERROR!?

I wrote them a letter:

To PayPal,

I bought some clothes from a website called ***.com on the 20th of August. I had £31.98 in my account and so I bought the clothes which cost £31.80. I got a email reciept from PayPal saying my transaction had gone through, and I also got a email receipt from ***.com saying they have recieved my payment and my transaction has gone through.

I am owed some money (£30.00) and was waiting for the receivement of it. I went to town on the 22nd of August, and checked my account which stated I had £31.00 in it. I withdrew £30.00

I have now recieved a letter from my bank saying that I have gone overdrawn without an overdraft limit in place!

Now I have a negative £54 pounds on my account! This is not my fault at all. PayPal sent me an e-reciept saying my transaction had gone through, but really PayPal debiteded me on the 26th of August. If I had known this on the day, I would have gone to the bank and paid the £5 overdraft charge. But now I am getting charged £25.

I am a student who is going to University in September. I dont have a job right now, nor do I have any saved money! This is ridiculous. Now because of PayPal's blunder I am being charged so much and this will definately effect my credit rating!

I want you to sort this out. As this is not my fault.

Do you think I will get the money paid? What should I do? Someone please help me! I'm so worried, this is stressing me out sooo much!!

  1. I must be missing the point here - it's irrelevant who your transactions were with - it's up to you to keep an eye on what goes in & out of your bank & when this happens. Unless Paypal have taken more than was due, any bank charges are your responsibility.

If you don't have a job or money, perhaps not spending £31.80 on clothes would be a good idea.

  2. Go to your pay pal account. Print a copy off of your transaction history. The call pay pal. Talk to them on the phone and see if this can be resolved. Also take transaction history to the bank. they may reverse the overdraft charges if you are not in a habit of over-drafting.

    Good Luck

  3. Be careful. Payments by debit cards and direct debit do not always show instantly on your bank account and can take several days to complete, especially over weekends and bank holidays.

  4. Welcome to the real world !

  5. What they did is perfectly acceptable.

    Happens to me too.

My bank will hold debits till they get a few and process them in the order that will give them the most overdraft fees.

It is your responsibility to balance your account.

Banks rely on the fact that people lose track , and make obscene amounts on fees .

    **edit**

Don't you keep track of your balance ? You are suppose to , that is how you prove you're credit worthy.

If you rely on the banks for your balance this WILL happen again.

This is indeed your fault , I know it seems it is not fair , but that is the way the system is set up.

I will admit it is shady , but business usually is.

    **edit**

The amount the machine gave you doesn't take in account debits which haven't went through yet.

The bank fooled you. You fell for it , and it's perfectly legal. In fact , they will pretend they did you a favor by saving you the "embarrassment" of bouncing a check (debit) , and charge you for this convenience.

    Bottom line....

You are suppose to know how much money you have left.

  6. Take the receipts from the websites and paypal to the bank as proof and go through your account statements so you can prove that this is not your fault.
