My Syrian has a ton of tubes attached to his cage plus a den that he uses as a nest. I also need help convincing my parents to let me get a dwarf hamster of two! Also, can you give me instructions on how to make a bin cage? Thanks!

  1. 1. No your syrian hamster will not mind switching to one cage, because the one your planning to put it in is more than big enough. Hamsters don't care about the size of the cage (mind they do care if its too small, but its not so its not a problem) they care about the different 'activities' they can do inside the cage.

    2. Yes the second cage will be big enough for the dwarf hamster. see my answer above

    3. It looks like two great cages, and i think your hamsters will have the time of their lives in there. And (If they're both female) you could try and take them together in one cage (or the two combined) after a while (you'll have to let them get to know each other and see how they react first though). Good Luck

  2. I do think the Syrian would be sad though. Why not let him keep it and buy the Dwarf another cage?... Anyway, most dwarfs need lots of space because they are more active than Syrians. My dwarf has a Critter Trail like the Second pic you provided connected to another huge cage.

  3. hmm. tough.

ya know, i would buy a multi level hamster cage (real levels, not just platforms) for the syrian and give the dwarf hamsters the two of those. if they fight, you can just disconnect them.the syrian enjoys the extra space but the dwarf will use the add~ons much more.

  4. Well, to tell you the truth, your Crittertrails provide the minimal space that your syrian needs. One Crittertrail is definitely not enough! I would keep the setup you have now.

A better suggestion is to give both of your hammies storage bins or plastic aquariums. Plastic storage bins can be found in stores like target, walmart, the container store, home depot, and even the dollar store sometimes. If you have good craftsmanship, you can create a bin cage. You can google "how to make a bin cage" and you'll get lots of results. An alternative is to drill many, many holes on the lid. Bin cages are cheap, big, and lightweight.

Remember, hamsters need a floorspace of at least 12 x 20. If you get an aquarium, I suggest a 15 gallon, but of course, bigger is better :] Good luck!

EDIT: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't do that to a syrian! And don't listen to the people that told you to put both dwarfs in the crittertrail x. Crittertrails are WAY TOO SMALL. Period. Crittertrails are only for human eyes. The levels are also dangerous for dwarfs. They can fall off and get hurt. Do what you think is right, but I suggest you go to a more hamster-educated place to get answers. You can find plenty of sites that give you good info. I hope you do what is right for your hamsters, not what some people think. CIRTTERTRAILS ARE WAY TOO SMALL.

    EDIT #2:

For a bin cage, there are typically 2 ways to make them. One is to cut a hole in the lid and attach wire mesh [hardware cloth] to it using nuts, screws, and washers. The links below are very good instructions:

    http://www.bitterepiphany.com/bin_cage.h...

Another way is a lot simpler. What you do is keep the lids on the bins. Then, you take a drill, and drill holes [about 1 cm big] allll over the top for ventilation. Try to drill as much as you can without breaking the lid!

I hope you go with bin cages! Remember, you need a floorspace of at least 12 x 20, but bigger is better!

    hamsterhideout.com is amazing!

  5. Hi

If I were you I deifnately wouldn't take away half of the room the syrian used to have just to get a new hamster. This isn't really fair on the hamster you have. I have a syrian with 2 houses joined, and I am at uni, so when I came back home for the summer hols, I had to remove one home to transport him. He hated it. And my hamster also started off in one home and got an extension - it doesn't matter..once they've got used to the room it's not fair to take it away again. In fact it took him days to recover from the journey home, and I got really worried about him.

If you really want a dwarf or two, WAIT until you can afford a new cage for them to live in. It's not fair to give your original pet less than he's used to. Remember, hamsters don't get to go out everyday like we do. That's where they spend all their time, apart form when they go in their exercise balls. The bigger the home the healthier and happier they'll be, and the longer they'll live. Don't make this hamster more unhappy just because you want a new pet.

In response to your other question, the second home would be big enough for dwarfs, but again, try to give them as much space as you possibily could - even if it takes a few more minutes a week to clean out.

  6. Yeah that'll be fine! Its funny, i have the crittertertrailx, and im saving up for the crittertrail2! Your hamster wil be fine, he ha it before so he'll get used to it in no time. you pick a best answer after about 1 day after you ask the question. You'll see under each answer it will say "pick as best answer". It doesnt say it now so check back later. Good luck! :)

p.s, you need to get 2 dwarf hamsters, becasue they have to live together. Leave your syrian by himself because they are solitary (you probably already know) make MAKE SURE you get TWO dwarfs becasue they NEED to live together. :) good luck!!!:))))

p.s.s, DONT put the syrain and the dwarf together. They will KILL each other especially since they are different breeds.  Here, look:

syrian+syrian=BAD (unless female is with male while female is in heat(mating))

    syrian+dwarf=VERY bad

    dwarf+dwarf+dwarf=GOOD

  7. It wont matter to him as long as he as plenty to do ye the second cage would be fine for a dwarf not sure if he would be able to get to the top bit though

  8. I don't have an answer to your first question but yes, the second cage is big enough for the dwarf hamster.

  9. Well no your syrian will not mind switching cages.Your dwarf hamsters cage is big enough for it just make sure he/she is not too big for the tubes :) ! plus you choose the best answer by clicking on the blue bubble below every answer! Good luck with your hammys! Have fun!

  10. As long as there is enough room and bedding for the syrian to make a proper den for itself... it really wont make a difference. The second cage has plenty of room for a dwarf, but depending on it's size may not be able to effectively use the tubes as dwarfs are usually too small for these kind of cages.
