Question:

I Have Serious Gaps in Employment and I'm on Disability, How do I explain those Gaps to Potential Employers?

I have been on disability for a number of years, but I'm torn between disclosing and lying about the gaps in my employment history. I am hesitant to disclose this information. I have disclosed in the past and I have been rejected from every job I've disclosed to. I believe that is why I'm getting rejected from different opportunities. However, I can't prove that this is occurring. Any factual help would be much appreciated, because I'd like nothing more than to work.

  1. i hear ya...i am in the same boat...i am disabled...haven't worked for 5 yrs...i have a 4 yr degree in business....i was looking for awhile...a staffing place called me and said...would you please update your resume.....i said it is...she said so what have you been doing for the past 5 yrs....it was like a slap in the face....

  2. To reject you because of a disability is discrimination.

The issue should be whether you can do the job, or not.

If you were in jail for those periods, they may have reasons.

But they are probably looking for reliability/dependability.

Perhaps a letter from a doctor &/or lawyer would help.

  3. be honest. If you are on disability the federal government has a ticket to work program and they can assist you. You will need to go to your local department of rehabilatative services office. They have a trial period for you to work and if you can't do it you wont loose your disability and have to go through the whole application process.

  4. Do not lie about the gaps.  If you lie and the employer finds out, your offer will be rescinded.  If you have already started work you can be fired.  When an employer checks your references, they will ask your references about the gaps.

The best thing to do is to tell the truth in generic terms.  If you were injured and unable to work, say so.  You do not have to go into great detail.
