It treats DVD writer as only CD-R. Microsoft gives a patch that doesnt work. Anyone overcame this prob?

  1. Create a system restore point, or:

    Start>run>regedit. File>export. Name that something like "backup.reg", save it somewhere you'll remember. You may even want to email it to yourself just so it's not sitting on your C: drive, or put it on an external drive, etc.

    Open up notepad, copy/paste this into it:

    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentCont...

    "UpperFilters"=-

    "LowerFilters"=-

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentCon...

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentCon...

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentCon...

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentCon...

    Then save that with whatever name you want, but make the extension a .reg such as "fix.reg"

    Find that fix.reg file you just made, double click it, say yes when it asks if you want to merge, and restart. That should get 'er done. If not, you've saved a backup copy of your registry just in case, either via restore or the backup.reg file you created.

    Well it looks like my text copy/paste is too long to fit in here, so go here:

    about 1/3 the way down the page you'll see it.

  2. Try to re-install the Driver for the dvd-rw

  3. Have you tried to burn something to a DVD? That might just be a "glitch" of a sort. :)

    Use Nero Burning ROM or a free alternative to Nero. I strongly suggest you avoid using the built-in burning feature of Windows XP.

    See my sources for some alternate programs for burning programs.
