  1. You need a full Cat A licence to ride a 150cc bike.

You will need to complete CBT to be able to ride up to 125cc with L-plates but will need to take your test to gain a full licence before you can ride anything bigger

  2. Yes you do. My son has just done his CBT and for the same reason as you.  Our local Honda dealership has a tuition centre. Think it cost him £100. It is self explanatory - Certificate of Basic Training. Says it all.

Cannot help with the bikes I am afraid as a neighbour gave him an immaculate Honda 90 step through - think people call these crunchboxes (?) and as his journey is all through built up areas that is doing all he needs.

  3. I too hold a C+E licence and can say YES you do need a CBT to ride a bike.  Having HGV catagories does not qualify you to ride on the road.

All the information you require about starting to learn, getting the catagories and whats expected on you CBT is at the following link:

As for which bikes to ride, its all very personal and depends on your usage.  I ride a Ducati but purely for leisure so economy doesn't come in to it.  For commuting you need something comfortable to ride thats economical and powerful enough to keep you going at 60mph.  Ask your instructor to recommend bikes and ask around on forums.  Everyones different.

    Hope this helps.

  4. I'm sure you are a very competent driver but does the initials CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) not answer your question?

  5. yes but it only goes up to 125cc and when you pass cbt it only lets you ride for 2 years and if you don't pass a full test it that time you have to take another cbt( they cost about £90 including bike hire for the day) you do bike control on and off road use of gears brakes manoeuvring round cones in figure of 8 and slalom also emergency stop turning bike in road

  6. yes you need to take the cbt, l'm a bus driver, responsible for up to 52 peoples lives per trip, and yet had to take a cbt test to ride a 125
