Question:

I JUST got an Xbox 360. I'm totally new to it. Xbox Live question and others...?

This question is similar to my last question, except for the fact that I HAVE the Xbox 360 this time. xP Anyway, I'm a total newbie to the Xbox. I want to try and get Xbox Live, but I don't have a computer in the same room as the console (and there's no way to move either one into the same room). Is there a way I can get them to connect wirelessly?

By the way, try to dumb down your explainations because I barely understand other tips I've gotten. I don't even know what a router is, I'm that big of an idiot. :/

Thank you so much for your time and help. I'd appriciate it even more if you could spare some helpful tips (games) to this new Xbox 360 gamer. ;)

  1. A router is a device that sits between your DSL or cable modem, and your PC or laptop.  It allows you to share your internet connection with multiple computers or other devices at the same time.  It does this by creating a local network inside your house that your computers, laptops, 360, etc. will be on, and then "routes" traffic for the internet over the modem.  A router can also provide some basic firewall protection for your computers and laptops against certain types of attacks.  Routers support both wired (ethernet) and wireless connections and cost about $40-60.

If the idea of running a long ethernet cable from one room to another doesn't appeal to you, the 360 CAN use a wireless connection to the router (not to your PC).

You can either buy the special 360 wireless adapter, which is overpriced at $100.  Or you can buy a standard wireless access point - these are sold over near the networking equipment at your store, as opposed to where the the 360 accessories are sold.  The access point has an advantage because it can be used with other devices that you may need to connect to your network - such as a DVR, other game console, etc.  It's also slightly cheaper.

Documentation with the router and access point are very detailed and written from the point of view of someone who's new to networking, so you shouldn't have any problems getting everything set up.

Once your network is setup, there is an option in the 360's dashboard to join Xbox Live.  Just follow the directions and you should be fine.  Remember, you will need a a Gold account in order to play games online, but even a Silver account can go online for updates, demos, the marketplace, sending messages, etc.
