"SOFIA (Reuters) - A series of powerful explosions in an arms dump rocked Bulgaria's capital Sofia on Thursday, police and military officials said.

It was not yet clear whether the blasts, which happened near the village of Chelopechene, on the eastern outskirts of Sofia, caused any injuries or damage.

Reuters eyewitnesses said the blasts, heard between 0330 and 0400 GMT( 11:30 p.m. and 12 midnight EDT), shook apartment blocks in eastern districts of Sofia.

Rescuers have been unable to reach the main blast site as ammunition continues to detonate at the dump, Sofia's mayor Boiko Borisov told the national radio and television.

He urged people to stay at home and close their windows.
