I NEED A MATH GENIUS!!!! Please help me. ?

Question

I did this problem and i am not sure that i got the right answer. Can some one help me out.

Two people are on a bicycle race around a circular track. One rider can race completely around the track in 40 seconds. The other rider takes 45 seconds. If they both begin the race at a designated starting point, how long will it take them to be together at this starting point again if the continue to race around the track??

The answer I came up with was 360 seconds.. or 6 min. Is this correct??

what's the lowest common multiple of 40 and 45?

40 = 2*2*2 * 5

45 = 3*3*5

LCM = 2*2*2*3*3*5 = 8 * 9 * 5 = 72 * 5 = 360

after 360 seconds (6 minutes) they'll be back at the same point

The way I figure it, if one guy is going 5 seconds slower than the other who goes 40, it will take 8 laps for the guy doing 40sec laps to lap the other guy, so I get 320 seconds... but, maybe you're right and I'm bassackwards.

= 02:02:02:03:03:05

= 2(5[6²])

= 2(5[36])

doesn't take a math genius just a little simple division all you have to do is know that if you multiply 40 x 9 and divide that total by 45 you will get 6.

The trick is when you are doing problems like this is knowing that when you multiply the number (in this case 40) by a number (in this case 9) when you divide it by the 2nd number (in this case 45) that it has to be the lowest whole number possible.

40 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 5

45 = 3 x 3 x 5

LCM(40, 45) = 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 x 3 x 5 = 360

You are exactly correct.  First cyclist makes 9 laps and the second cyclist makes 8 laps.  It will take 360 seconds = 6 minutes
