On one side, the mass media serves a noble purpose of spreading information to the masses and helps empower the people while keeping tabs on the powerful.  On the other hand, the Marxist would argue that the mass media is a pawn under the control of wealthy capitalists and the "news" broadcast to the masses is specifically intended to give the information that the powerful want you to have, and that the "news" is capitalist propaganda for all practical purposes.
