  1. it will take time.he will take his time to find the perfect shell.just amke sure that they are the correct size and he will be okay

  2. Awww, they look really freaky when theyre out of their shells dont they? :p I have 12 of em'. It's normal, what yours is going through. He'll eventually find a shell thats perfect for him, I promise. Just let him do his thing, he'll find one when he wants to. He'll be fine. I had a few that did that. But they eventually found one they liked :)

If he still doesn't find a shell in an unreasonable amount of time, or your just really worried, you can take another approach, and just put him in a shell yourself, although that does risk you of getting pinched. Then, fill the clean shell with cool water. Finally, dip the naked crab in water and gently push it into the shell, abdomen first. You can threaten it in further by tapping lightly on its head so it will quickly draw back into its shell.

EDIT: Hmmm, I just researched a little bit for you, and I learned that this isnt actually normal behavior. It usually means the hermit is stressed. You need to make sure the humidity and temperature are where they should be. humidity should be 70%-80% and the temp around 70f-80f. I know I sound like a broken record saying this over and over again, but poor tank conditions is usually the cause.

He needs access to fresh and salt dechlorinated water. The salt has to be aquarium salt. You can add some salt water to the extra shells to try to encourage a move. make sure these are non-painted shells. Painted shells harm land hermit crabs.

Check the animal for mites. Small dots running around on it or the abandoned shell. Another reason for going naked is mites.

If the animal is a new animal it might be stressed because of change in the environment. Going from the wild to a pet shop to someone's house is hard on their little bodies.

The good news is with the proper humidity land hermit crabs can survive weeks with out shells. So if you can get the animal eating and drinking again you it may go back in the shell.

natural peanut butter is a great " get well soon" treat.
