  2. If you want a public school from home, use k12.org or Virtual Academy.  They provide k-12 education, a laptop, printer/scanner, and the curriculum.  They guide you and the child.  They are great.  Highly recommended.

  3. Honestly, I've got to say I wouldn't recommend online schooling for a 5th grader; it works well for many high schoolers, but they tend to be more independent.  At 10-11, kids still need a lot more individual instruction.

That being said, what state do you live in?  Each offers different things.  The only online school that I would recommend for a 5th grader is K12.  Some states offer K12 for free, others don't.

Edit - if you're looking for an online curriculum that you administer and monitor, there are many good ones; Ambleside Online, EdAnywhere, etc.  Please clarify which you need - an online curriculum, or an online academy.

  4. First check HSLDA.org for the laws in your area.  You need to make sure you are doing things legally.

then the cheapest online I know of are amblesideonline.com (free) and time4learning.com ($20/mo) These are what I use together for my Daughter doing 3rd grade work .

These are only online curricula, you have to monitor your child's work yourself. Time4learning presents the material in a way that is very easy for children to follow mostly independently. If you want a complete school online with grades/teachers etc it will not be cheap.

  5. I use this site for all 3 of my kids:

If there is a book they don't like I just go to: mainlesson.com & find another book to take it's place.

I haven't updated my main homeschool website yet with this years school plan but feel free to take a look and see how we learn.

I rarely buy stuff for our homeschool.

We get some books from: Paperback Swap or Bookmooch (online book trading sites)

A lot of their books are old fashion books found online.

Kids can learn from tv show, movies, computer games, board games & so on.

I think this year all we are buying are binders, computer paper & maybe printer ink.
