I Need Help With My Zune Device. PLEASE!!?

Question

I hooked up my Zune player to the computer and I pulled up the Zune screen on the computer and it said there is a update available but I pressed cancel because I didn't feel like updating it and when I pressed cancel it says I need to download the software so I acn put songs on my Zune and other things on it. But on my Zune Device it says connected but on the screen it says that its not connected. Could some one help me fix this problem?
