1. 80% of a number is equivalent to the sum of the number and 5.

2. Suppose you have an inheritance of $24,000. Your financial advisor recommends that you diversify by placing some of the money in stocks and some in bonds. Based upon market conditions, she recommends that the amount in bonds should equal three-fifths of the amount invested in stocks. How much should be invested in stocks and in bonds?

Answer: $15,000 in bonds, $9,000 in stocks

3. The purity of gold is measured in karats, with pure gold being 24 karats. Other purities of gold are expressed as proportional parts of pure gold. For ex: 18 karat gold is 18/24, 12 karat gold is 12/24. and so on. How much pure gold should be mixed with 12 karat gold to obtain 72 grams of 18 karat gold.

Answer: 36 g pure gold with 36 g 12 karat gold.

4.The perimeter of a rectangle is 26 ft. The width is 3 more than the length. What are the dimensions?

Answer: 5 ft long, 8 ft wide

   -.2n = 5

  -2n = 50

n = -25

4. Let x = length, then x+3 = width

x + x + 3 + x + x+3 = 26

4x + 6 = 26

4x = 20

x = 5

length = 5, width = 5+3 = 8

2. Let x = amount in stocks. Then (3/5)x = amount in bonds.

x + (3/5)x = 24,000

x + .6x = 24000

1.6x = 24,000

Divide by 1.6

x = 15,000

15,000 in stocks

(3/5)(15,000) = 9,000 in bonds
