Question:

I Need Some Old Character names?

Ok, I'm writing a story with characters born in various years. I'm having trouble thinking of names for them and i cont find any useful websites either. I don't want the name to be TOO difficult to pronounce- this would take away from my story. But i also don't want any names such as: John, William, Mary, Anne etc...

here are the gender and birth year.

Male- 1973

(he's a quiet, know it all, jerk if that helps with thinking of a proper name)

Female- 1925

(she's an average girl, nice, friendly, girly)

Female- 1897

(i'm thinking of using Violet for her, sound ok?)

Male- 1849

("leader of the pack" kinda guy)

Male- 1739

(I might use Abram for this one)

I know kinda jumpy with the years ^_^

If you can help, I'd appreciate it a whole lot<3

<3

p.s. in this story there is also a normal teenage girl (17) and i'm thinking of using Grace, but if anyone has any suggestions i'm open for changing it. She's shy but has an attitude if that helps.

thanxxx. ^.^

  1. There is a VERY cool name site that ranks name by year (going back to the 1880s). It will tell you if a particular name was popular that year, or if it wouldn't have been used at that time.

For instance...you were thinking Violet (1897). According to the name site, it was the 207th most popular name at that time for girls. It became much more popular in around 1910.

Check it out! It's really fun to play with:

    Otherwise, here are my suggestions:

    Male- 1973 -- Chad

    Female- 1925 -- Rose

Female- 1897 -- Nora or Lydia

Male- 1849 -- Samuel or Henry

Male- 1739 -- Abram would be good or Ephraim

  2. For the male(1973) Elliot comes to mind, for the jerk part, but all people named Elliot are not jerks..

Female (1925) Lillie, not old or young, but the common names like Mary and Anne are more popular at this time

Female Violet very nice, should suit her

Male 1849 Ulysses but goes by Sam..kinda like General U.S. Grant, he was a leader, but very noble

Grace for the 17 year old sounds good, she may be the cornerstone to the whole plot maybe and all the others are just players in her story? Could she be a time traveler to help these people?? Set history right kinda thing? Just a thought...

    Last names...Grace Perchant?

    Violet Leffingwell?

    Lillie Sanders?

    Ulysses or Samuel Montgomery?

Elliot Bainbridge (very brainy and know-it-all type)

this all is only an opinion, good luck with the story!

  3. I Googled "popular [gender] names in [year]", and these are some of the options I came up with. :)

    Male, 1973:

    Michael

    Christopher

    Jason

    James

    David

    Female, 1925:

    Margaret

    Clara

    Alice

    Hazel

    Pearl

    Male, 1849:

    James

    Simeon

    Joseph

    William

    Daniel

    Male, 1739:

And Grace is a wonderful name as well! You should definitely use it! :)

  4. Male- 1973:

    Reginald

    Male- 1739

    Abram is good. Also:
