My family is planning to surprise my grandmother with a 70th birthday party in Feb. of 2009. We thought it would be a neat idea if we made a scrapbook for her with pictures of herself, friends and family from the last 70 years. We have decided to send all of the party guest a letter explaining the scrapbook and asking them to hand write something short and sweet along with a small picture to go in the scrapbook....

The colors of her party will be black, white, red and silver, and i would like to use the same colors in the scrapbook, but my question to you guys in scrapbook world is, do you think it would look funny if i use those colors through the whole book even though the pictures themselves are all sorts of colors??

Another thing I thought of was getting all of the photos re printed in black and white to MAKE it match but I dont know how expensive that would be?

Someone Please HELP! Thanx Guys!

  1. this is what I would do personally, it would take alot of time but if you have others that are helping you  ...scan the photos...and using a photo editing program change all the pics to black and white..or there are other editing tools that you can use to change the phot to fit the page colors....

by the way there are many many yahoo groups regarding scrapbooking where everyone is willing to help with anything  and you can get many ideas from the members photos and uploads

    happy scrapping .....

  2. It's a really great idea to use the same paper and colors throughout the album.  This will help with its cohesiveness and tie the pictures together even though they don't match each other.  I think using a simple black and white patterned paper pack and having red and silver accents like ribbon and brads and such will make it look really classy and beautiful.

There are a lot of tools out there to use to help you with layouts and ideas.  Personally I like to use my "Imagine" scrapbook layout book by Jeanette R. Lynton.  It's from Close To My Heart, which I sell product for.  You can look online at closetomyheart.com and find a consultant near you.  One of the other books is now available is most large craft stores.  That one's called "Reflections" and has over 100 layout ideas with cutting guides to help you.  It'll help with making your layout simular and complement each other.

I also have some ideas on my blogspot...www.craftroyalty.blogspot.com

Hope that helps!  Good luck!  I'm sure whatever you do it'll look great!

  3. I think it would be perfect.  The consistent theme will tie everything together and will make it elegant.  Great idea!

As far as the photos in B&W... if you can a Kodak Picture Maker kiosk you can scan them and covert them to B&W for around 23 cents for a 4x6.

  4. If you are able to scan the pictures then take them to Walmart or another store that has the Kodak photo machine there...they have an 8 x 10 photo book that will hold around 35 pictures on 10 8 x 10 pages...the pictures will vary in sizes and you can choose different backgrounds or use pictures that you scan for your backgrounds...for a bit around $25.00 they will put this in a binder for you...and if you need more than 35 pictures you can add more 8 x 10's with different amounts of picture son it...it is $2.00 for each additional 8 x 10...for the easy and time this is a really nice way to do it (in my opinion)...and you can add text to each page if you wish...check it out...you might find it worth your time and money (or go for the fun and expense of buying a lot of actual scrapbooking materials...but this is an easy way and doesn't take as much time)  hope this helps.

  5. What a great idea. She will love it!

I don't think you need to get the photos re-printed. I would just leave them as they are. Keep in mind that scrapbooks are what you want them to be and all the photos do not have to "match."

For consistency, create the first page and use this as a guide for laying out the remainder of the pages. If all of the pages have a similar look and feel, the book will "flow" nicely.

You can also consider doing double mattes for each photo. I would use black and white paper so it goes will all of the photos. This will help tie in each photo to the next. Then you can play around with red and silver as the background paper, varying how much of each will be on that page. So, I may have the pictures on a 1/8" black matte with white matte that has a 1/4" edge or something like that. You can do all the same or do some with a black matte and then some with a white matte. It's really up to you but by sticking with the same colors it will make for a nice look in the end.

I find when doing an entire book of one theme, this is how the book comes together the quickest. By creating the first page and using it as a guide and just changing a few things, it really helps put it together and has a nice finished look. Hope this helps! Good luck. :)

  6. No, not at all. It sounds really nice actually...keeping a consistent theme is always a great idea. Black and whites are not that much..I think even Walmart can do those reprints for you.
