I Never Understood Why Hotels Don't Have A 13th Floor, Do You?

I always laugh at this because most hotel skip from 12 to 14. Call it anything you want be it 12, 30, or 100; you're still on the 13th floor!

The only way is to have an actual 13th floor not used at all and just skip right to floor 14.

Well, if you know about the show The Twilight Zone, or the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror in Disney World, you get an idea of why.

Supposedly (according to the show) the Hollywood Tower Hotel was the greatest, fanciest hotel of it's time. There was a really bad storm one night, and lightning hit one of the wings. The five people that were in there disappeared. They were on the elevator, at the 13th floor. They're supposed to have been thrown into the Twilight Zone. (Oh, noes!)

That's why there's no 13th floors. 13 is an unlucky number, anyway.

EDIT: It's not because of the movie 1408, like drug_free_boy said...that movie's plot is based on the fact that hotels don't have 13th floors. The superstition was there LONG before the movie.

I guess they fear too many people will refuse to rent the 13th floor and they would loose money, Skipping the 13th floor as you propose amounts to that, businesses cannot loose money.

It's just marketing; not all building owners are superstitious, but they know that many customers are. Building owners know it's cheaper to trade a "13" for a "14" than trying to change people's minds.

It's true that the 14th floor it's still physically the 13th floor but it's the number "13" itself the element of bad luck in the mind of believers. For them as long as the number is not present, every is fine.

yah but its just superstition...and it doesn't help with all those movies like 1408 where the 13th floor and 13th room just happens to be haunted and all that jazz.

Cos 13 is an unlucky number.

In some asian countries they don't use the number 4 either because 4 sounds similar to the asian word for "death"
