Question:

I/O VS Outboard?

I am looking at getting a new boat and I am unsure which type of motor to get. I am looking at 18 ft fiberglass bowriders. Am I going to get virtully the same gas mileage out of a 3L mercruiser(135hp) and a 135 hp fourstroke outboard. If the usage is the same. Any other pros and cons that I am not aware of. Thanks in advance.

  1. Top Ten Reasons Why Outboards Are Better:

    10. Engine doesn't take up valuable space better utilized for livewell/baitwell/fishing gear/beer.

    9. Doesn't require a contortionist to work on the engine.

    8. High power-to-weight ratio.

    7. Repower? Easy.

    6. Winterize? No need.

    5. Navigating shallow water or stumpfield? Parking on the beach? Spur of the moment prop change? No problem - engine tilts completely out of the water.

    4. No bellows.

    3. Trim meter broke? Who cares!

    2. Dead battery? You did save that little rope with the handle that comes with all outboards, right?

And the number one reason why outboards are better:

    1. Everyone can see how big it is.

  2. On the up side the outboard will probably go faster and you will not have to have it winterized I would think it would get better mileage too especially if it is fuel injected the 3.0 liters are all carbuerated. There are also less things to go wrong on the outboard and it will not cost as much to service because you won't have to pull the drive to check the alignment and grease the u-joints and splines like you would on a I/o.

  3. a inboard burns less gas than an outboard

Bottom line: this is a personal preference. I like I/Os or I/B's in ski boats, but that is me. Some of my friends love their O/B ski boat. However, in my experience I have found my engine to be lower maintenance than those of my friends. On the flip side theirs is so much easier to winterize.
