  1. Someone else just asked the same thing!  :-)

Dramamine and Bonine are over-the-counter medications for motion sickness. Dramamine will most likely make you drowsy. Bonine isn't supposed to make you sleepy.  Benadryl is an over-the-counter allergy medication that will definitely make you drowsy.  I've tried the Benadryl capsules that are in the adult allergy aisle, but they don't make me sleepy.  The ones that make me sleepy are the grape-flavored children's chewable Benadryl in the aisle with the children's cold medicines.

Motion sickness is more likely to occur if you lie down. If you can look out the front window and focus on something in the distance, your ears and your eyes will give your brain the same message - "Hey! We're moving forward!" It's when you try to look out a side window for a long period, or at the electric lines on their poles along the road (DON'T - just take my word on that one), or even looking at your lap to read a book that you get sick. Your ears tell your brain that your body is moving forward, but your eyes are focused somewhere else.

Here's something that may help. Do you have room in the back seat to keep a small cooler? Get two or three wash cloths wet, fold them neatly to fit over your forehead, and put them in the freezer overnight. Before you leave, put them in ziploc bags and stick them in a small cooler with a small bottle of water and some of those blue ice pacs. When you feel the nausea starting, get a wash cloth out and put it on your forehead or on the back of your neck. You can use that small bottle of water to keep the cloths damp. The cold may help your body deal with the nausea.

Fresh air can help, too.  Oh, and if anybody in the vehicle smokes, you might want to let them know that their cigarettes are going to cause you to have a violent reaction.

If you can sit up front, or if you can sit in the middle of the back seat so you can see out the front window, that should help a great deal.  Just keep focusing your eyes on something ahead of you in the distance.

I hope your trip goes well. My brother and I used to suffer from car sickness pretty badly, and although we both outgrew it, I will never forget how awful it feels. (Especially I'll never forget how sick I got the time I was laying in the back seat, counting the electric lines above the car. Yeah, that was BAD.)

  2. Motion sickness has nothing to do with motion, believe it or not. It is a build up of static electricity within your body. This build up causes you to feel nauseous.

Ever seen cars dragging those little black ribbons behind them? They appear to be attached to the bumper, and they're dragging along on the ground. Most people don't think twice about them.

In actuality, these are "grounding ribbons". They ground the car so that static electricity within the car doesn't build up ... it's transferred to the road as you drive, and the passengers don't get sick.

This is actually the reason people get sick on airplanes, but as there is no way to "ground" an airplane, dramamine is the only solution.

Whichever car you are mainly a passenger in, ask the owner if he or she will install grounding ribbons. The whole problem simply disappears.

If this is impossible, you need to stop every 10 minutes, take off your shoes (rubber soles prevent grounding) and simply stand there for 30 seconds while you're grounded.

  3. Ginger seems to help if Bonine or Dramamine won't.

Candied ginger can be found at health food stores. Cost Plus Import store has my favorite Ginger Bears, candied ginger in the shape of gummy bears.

Ginger ale can help- the bubbles can help move things around and get extra gas out so you don't throw up (it's why they offer free sodas on airplane flights)

Ask if you can sit next to a window or the front seat where you can see and follow the road. I used to sit as close to the front or next to a window on buses and watched the road and daydream about living in all those different places I saw going by. I also used to keep track of what I considered landmarks, such as fascinating restaurants or odd shaped buildings or fun signs. For example, The rearing palomino horse statue in front of My Brother's Place outside of Delano on Hwy 99 in Central California (I love horses) , the very sanitary dairy farm on the other side of Delano, the motorboats with waterskiers at Riverland just before Kingsburg (they boat and ski in water bearely 6-8 feet!), the Swedish windmill and painted horses in Kingsburg, the miles of table grape vines in Selma, all are landmarks I used to look for traveling to all the lakes and mountains in Northern California as a kid. Now my daughter and I play "I Spy" for miles just looking for odd things out of place, such as a boat in the middle of the Mojave Desert or a fast-food Playland-style playground in someone's back yard. By focusing on what's outside your window instead of what is happening inside your stomach, you will be able to manage your motion sickness better. Nothing changes your mind like waking up from a long overnight bus ride and seeing colorful hot-air balloons just taking flight for the start of a hot-air balloon festival outside of Medford, Oregon. Look for intersting things, pay attention to road signs, see the world outside your window, and try to forget about being sick for a change.

Take practice runs if you can. Have your parents take you on some drives on different roads, or even up to the town near your camp and back if they can. By being used to being on the road more often, it will help you more.

  4. hey an old trick my dad taught me is timing eat light then about an hour you food will digest have a small cup of water with about 1/2 gram baking soda and about the same of meat tenderizer put this in a 1 cup of water I use to be boat sick and it worksdosent taste great but very effective try to drink in two gulps after that you should be good/ good luck

  5. Motion sickness is caused by a conflict between your inner ear sensing motion but your eyes not seeing motion. Things like reading books, where you're not looking at motion will cause you to get motion sickness. The best thing to do is simply look at the scenery around you as it goes by. This will eliminate the conflict and will keep you well.

  6. you can either take dramamine before you go which lasts about 8 hours and prevents car sickness or you can take benadryl once you begin to feel carsick. benadryl works well but takes a few minutes to get it working. you can also suck on a mint. the best thing to do is not focus on a small space such as a book or portable DVD player.
