I think Onstar monitors *(and emergency services

are the only ones that know where you are)

besides it on star will only active if you push the onstar button

or you have an accident and the airbags deploy

"strangers" can not monitor your conversations with onstar

Onstar can only find out where your car is when you ask for help or you're in a crash. If your car is part of a criminal investigation they have to legally hand over the info too.

Can you say "BIG BROTHER" ?  I won't buy them myself, If someone steals my car...well thats what insurance is for.

You are correct.  Strangers can monitor your movements, even if you don't want them to.   In return, your car is found if it ever gets stolen.

Would you ever pay the $20 a month for the Theft Protection?

The On Star equipment uses the same type electronics that GPS units use so in theory a person can look at a screen and see exactly (with in 25ft) where your vehicle is. As for privacy, well that went out the window years ago when cameras started getting installed everywhere. Ever heard of Google Earth?

Note that the Rental car companies have had GPS installed in the cars, not the consumer gadgets that tell you where you are, but hidden inside the car there is a device that tells the Rental company where their car is at all times.
