  1. All of the above questions are great, and correct.  The did, however, leave out the easiest and cheapest method.  Buy an underwater metal dector and just start diving.  Keep an eye on the weather, there are many beaches (key west is a great one) that are littered with ship wreck junk (and valuable stuff) after a good storm.  I can only imagine that there is far more artifacts still in the sands underwater than what just washes up on the shore.  Good luck!

  2. Treasure Hunting......Hard career to get into. It takes alot of research and time to hunt for something no one has seen for years. There are alot of people out there trying it, and alot of them are going broke and finding nothing. Your best bet is to get in with a crew that is already hunting. Do a treasure hunting search online and you can find some crews and places to go.

  3. Several things you'll want to do:

First - become a student of naval history.  The vast majority of treasure hunting is historical research.  You don't just jump in the water with a metal detector and start looking around.

Be prepared to spend years researching and locating candidate wreck sites, and then months on location actually doing the searching.

Second - develop the skills you'll need to implement a search.  These include technical diving skills: decompression diving, zero-visibility diving, confined space diving - wreck and cave.  You'll also need team organization skills - treasure hunters generally work in teams.  It wouldn't hurt to develop some skill as a diplomat either since many countries are getting pickier and pickier about "national treasures" no matter where they're found.

You'll also need access to resources: an appropriately equipped boat, shore support, help with conserving the artifacts you find.

Oh, and money.  Treasure hunting is not an inexpensive undertaking...

  4. Many good points have already been given. Unfortunately if you do not know the correct people around you it might be hard to get into contact with treasure hunters.

A good idea is to apply for a membership at a scuba diver community and from there try to get new contacts.

If you want to reach out gloabally I would recommend http://www.scubuddies.com

There are also a good number of regional communities if you do a search on Google.
