I'm a computing graduate recently completed my degree in computing.

I have no work experience in computing whatsoever and now have been offered a position as a data entry operator in transcribing medical information.

I was wondering if anyone here could advise me what potential growth I will get out this position in two years time?

I understand, alot of I.T jobs now requires a minimum of 3 years experience. So I decided to take up this data entry position as a stepping stone starting my career. I am keen to be a database Administrator in 3 years time.

My question is:

1. Am I making the right choice in taking this position up in hope that it will enhance IT skills?

2. Will this position enable me to archeive my chosen career?

Yes, I am confuse in starting up my career, I feel that finding a fulltime position has increasingly difficult to find, so I dont want to leave out opportunities that comes my way. Please Help !!!

Thanks.

  1. YES. u will benifit from the exp so much, all placed will need you to have the exp in data entry so take the role get the exp and u can then move on

good work and remember just coz u have the degree u still need exp before u can get a great job

  2. if you want to take it just to bring in money, fine. Maybe take it and keep job hunting. At least call them and ask if this job has a career path to database administration and what that path is.

If you have a true computer science degree from a 4-year college, a data entry job could actually HURT your credibility. It is certainly not a path to database administration. It's almost a no-skill job, like typing. You don't get any computer skills with data entry work.

I'm surprised you don't know this, and it makes me wonder if maybe you have a 2-year associates degree instead, or one from a proprietary school. Is it in computer science or data processing?

If it's a comp sci degree, look for work in programming, testing or network administration. Or maybe even a junior DBA job, if they exist. Even help desk work will give you more skills and look more valid than data entry.

But to get any skilled job, you will need to take more care with your writing. Look at your sentence "I understand, alot of I.T jobs now requires..." "A lot" is two words, not one. If you're going to put a period after "I" you need to put one after "T" as well. And it's "a lot of jobs require" - no "s" on the end of requires when you're talking about more than one jobs.
