  1. want a powerful graphics card? dont buy a laptop

Buy a well specced standard PC and change the graphics card yourself, its easy.

You will also want 2-4gb of ram, but you can also install this yourself easily.

even buying a second hand computer with a good processor would be a good idea, you could pick one up on ebay for £100 and spend the money you save on a hardcore graphics card.

  2. If you go with a laptop, you'll need a gaming laptop like those found at http://www.alienware.com or http://www.falcon-nw.com/ You're going to find that they are more expensive (think twice the cost), not as configurable as desktops, and more limited in upgradeability than desktops. However, if you truly need a package that can run games and can be packed up and moved in seconds (or minutes anyway), that's the way to go.

If you go with a desktop, you have a myriad of choices. Alienware and Falcon Northwest are a couple. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaming_PC has a pretty decent list, too. My personal preference is to build my own. I do that because it's really not hard, all the parts will be first rate (although not necessarily the fastest, biggest, and most expensive), and each part will be the best bang-for-the-buck part available at the time. There are literally dozens of sites on how to build your own PC.

As far a which graphics card to buy, look at Tom's Hardware's list of best graphics cards for the money at http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best... (Tom's Hardware is a great place to find out a lot about any component.) To get a feel for the components that are leading the pack, I look at:

    http://www.extremetech.com/

    http://www.guru3d.com/

    http://www.hardocp.com/

    http://www.sharkeyextreme.com/

    http://www.slizone.com/page/home.html

    http://www.tweaknews.net/

    as well as Tom's Hardware.

A little bit of research and you'll get a good idea of what you can afford and what's the best now. (Don't be disappointed if the "best" only lasts for a month after you buy it. That's the way it always is.)
