Question:

I Use A Clothesline - Am I "White Trash"?

by  |  earlier

I grew up with a clothesline and love the freshness and longer wear of clothes, as well as the incredible energy savings. It just got back to me that my sister-in-law thinks that clotheslines are "white trash". We do live in the very prosperous northeastern United States, but have over an acre of property and the line is only visible if you're standing in our back yard. Also, despite having privacy, I am modest enough to only hang our underwear on a drying rack indoors.

What are your thoughts?

  1. You are not white trash... but your sister-in-law is s****.. Go tell her to watch the David Suzuki commercial.

  2. not white trash,  thrifty yes, energy conscious  yes, good for you sister in laws are always jealous of the other.

  3. Your sister-in-law is trash talkin' cause she is caught up in the jibber jabber of the "idea" of class...but she has no clue, you obviously are the smart one who even has enough class to hide your skivvies from people who are hundreds of feet away!...;-)

  6. NO not at all!!  That is just old fashioned. It's very cute!

  7. On the contrary.  Using a clothesline might not aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but it does the environment good.

  8. If that all it takes to be white trash well there is a h**l of alot of white trash in the world...lol I love the clothes line, but my back yard is full of trees and lots of shade there really isnt a good spot for it, but I would love to have one again my mom did it was great.

  9. Not at all.  Being trashy or not is all about how you carry yourself.... well, and maybe a bit about sanitation.

  10. Not white trash, maybe old fashioned. I like it! I admire women who have the motivation to do that. Reminds me of childhood. Happy times. :)

  11. No, you are not white trash.  Seems the consensous of your answers, but just wanted to repeat that.

It is the green way to go about it.

    It does save energy.

And the dryer does wear clothing out much faster.

I would be interested to know if this person actually blow drys all of her garments, such as fragile under garments and lingerie.  Almost everyone hang dries those things, and its for the same reasons.

I actually admire you for using a line.  I have tried to, but we have soo much laundry its a pain to do it.

And actually, with the whole green campaign, it my not be that far in the future that dryers are looked at as trashy

  12. I LOVE a clothesline!

Oh, the memories of when I was just a girl helping my grandma hang out the wash.   I would sit for hours mesmerized   by the wind whipping and blowing the clothes......and the smell,  OMG!  so fresh!

My husband hates the clothesline, he calls it "country" and he can't understand why I would want to use it when we have a

clothes dryer........he will never understand!  `sigh~

ps.  no,  you are not white trash.......just a smart person!

  13. Your sister-in-law is a snob. Clotheslines are environmentally responsible, they make your laundry smell great, and it allows you to get through your laundry faster. What could be wrong with that?  I love using a clothesline!

Ignore her, pity her, shrug her off.  It sounds like she's got nothing better to do than sit around and judge others.

"Intelligent people talk about ideas. Average people talk about things. Small people talk about other people."

  14. you're sister in law is a city snob!I'll bet your bed smells better than her bed.

  15. I hang my clothes on the line for the same reasons. I dont think its a PWT thing....I live in the suburbs of NYC...a pretty nice area but the thing about it is that I dont really care what others think. She probably doesnt appreciate it because she didnt grow up with one.

  16. Only an idiot would call hanging out your clothes "white trash", sounds like someone who lived too close to poverty and is too quick to attempt a clear demarcation between them and their fear.

Fact is hanging out your clothes on the line is the "green" thing to do.  Remind your sister-in-law that gas, electric and fuel oil are all expendable resources that kill the earth and are killing us economically with their prices.

Tell her you chose the smarter, more conservation aware method of drying your clothes.  You save the earth, save money and if we all did it, maybe even people if we reduce usage and demand.

Be proud -- let it all hang out!

PS -- there are some localities in the country where hanging out clothes is banned and people are now challenging those ordinances -- many people would love to be able to hang their clothes outside to dry.

  17. Nothing smells better than bed sheets dried on a clothesline!!!
