Does Bourbon get better with age or does it go bad when it is too old??

I have a 4/5 quart of 86 proof I.W. Harper Kentucky Straight Bourbon aged 130 months and in a gift box where the container is shaped like a wooden barrel. It was given to me as a gift in 1975. I had broken the seal and tried some back in 1975 and hasn't been opened since. You can tell I don't drink much so I am not the one who can tell if it is good or bad if I tasted it. Does Bourbon go bad if it gets too old?

  1. If it has a s***w on cap then it is ok. If it had a cork type seal then it may be bad. I mean...it is 40% alcohol so I don't think anything should have grown in it. If it is still golden/brown/whiskey colored, if it still smells like whiskey then it'll be ok

After the bottle is opened, it will still last indefinitely until the bottle is roughly a third emptied. Until that point enough spirit evaporates into the empty air that the environment is right. But once you've had more than a third or so of the bottle, the air/whiskey balance can throw off the spirit and you may see it turn cloudy and the flavor will go off.

  2. You'd better send it to me for a taste test.  Then I can answer you better.
