The basic function of the engine is same for all. U have to know

only about the type of engine. whether it is 2stroke or 4 stroke ,petrol or desil. www.howstuffworks.com is the best site to view the snapshots of how engine works. U can also refer the Magazine of Autocar india.

engines are of many types- let us say diesel and petrol. Both have some stages which make them work. Now that you aeeading about automobiles you may better consult an NCERT textbook...those people have explained engines in a very thorough manner
