  1. Three week old puppies need to be with their mother until they are at least 8 weeks of age. And if the pup is smaller sometime they can not go to their new home until 10 weeks or so.

Even though you are wanting a mix breed, both the Bichon and Shih Tzu do not shed as much as some other dogs. They still will shed a little and will need to be brushed at least every other day (no less) to keep them from matting.  You Will need to take this pup to the groomers at least every 4 months to keep their coat trimmed and in good condition.  You need to research both these breeds before getting a pup. That way you have an idea of what to expect.

As for leaving the pup in a kennel all day, that is a major NO NO. If no one is home during the day you will need someone to come to your house and take the pup out to potty a couple times a day and to eat and drink. It is going to be quite hard to potty train if no one is around to do these things.  Just trying to potty train on weekends is not going to help one bit. This is a daily task that needs to be constant.

  2. It is usually one hour for each month of age, plus one hour, so a 2-month-old puppy can only be alone, or hold its potty for 3 hours at the most.

It's great that you want a puppy, but it will take some work to potty train.  Here are some tips on training:

*I use a crate to train with. It is the method I prefer, compared to other methods I have tried. I noticed that if they are in the crate, while I am doing chores, they are o.k., because the crate allows them to see me and be re-assured. The crate can also be a comfort when stored in the basement for dogs who live in areas where thunderstorms and tornados are an issue. . However, use the method that works best for you.....a laundry basket, a cardboard box, a woof-woof house, child gates......whatever works for you.

*Outside, pee pad, litter box, whichever method you are using. When the puppy is first little, keep the pee pad, litter box near the food and water dish, so the puppy can eat and drink, and then go potty. You can move it away as they get older. The pee pad has a scent that smells and initiates potty. Sometimes a pee pad makes a sound that scares some puppies, so you might want to use a litter box if that happens. The pee pad allows a puppy to walk around, but a litter box keeps the puppy in one place.

*Bedrooms, I use the bedroom and living room for training, because it works for me. Choose rooms that work for you, but watch for rooms that are damp, or drafty. While my puppies sleep in the bedroom during training, once they are trained, I let them sleep where they want to. They don't have to sleep in the bedroom forever.

*Treats. While I use treats for training, you don't have to. I like Charlee Bears for training (a little cracker for a little mouth,) I use them for training, but once they are trained, I cut back on them.

*Some puppies will go potty in the same spot each time. Some puppies have to be told to go potty. A command like "go out" for pee, or "go finish" for p**p, might work for you, keep saying “go finish” until the puppy poops. This is a good thing to train if you travel with your dogs. By using commands, the puppy won't get confused when you are visiting someone, on vacation with you, or when you get to a new home. The command will tell them what you want them to do in an unfamiliar place. You might also want to use a leash method, so the puppy doesn’t sneak off, or for strange places.

*Yelling. It is not a good idea to "yell" or "spank" your puppy and then take them outside when they have an accident. They may get confused and think that going outside is punishment. While you want to correct them, if you are extreme, they may not want to go outside again. Shake it off, and resume your schedule. You have to keep it real. Puppies train at their own pace, but a puppy can only hold their potty for a few hours. A guide would be 1 hour for each month of age, plus 1 hour, so a three-month-old puppy should only be expected to hold their potty for 4 hours at most.

  3. YOU SHOULDN'T OWN A PUPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, just wanted to be as dramatic.

There are so, so very many things wrong with this question I don't even want to begin.  You are a child.  Your mother is right not to let you have a dog.  Grow up, get a job, move out and then you can have all the puppies your county will allow you to have.  This puppy would not be very happy in your hands.

  4. A bichon-shih tzu mix still sheds... if it has hair, it sheds.  Besides a mix wont guarantee that your brother wont be allergic to it.

A puppy can only be crated for 2-3 hours at a time.  They need out to potty ALOT.  When you are home, it needs out every hour, if not more.  At nite, puppies wake up several times to go out to pee!  No a puppy will not be ok in a crate while you are gone at school all day!  Someone will have to let it out to pee.

For potty training you dont want a big cage, you want a crate that is only big enough for the pup to comfortably turn around and lay down, any more than that and the pup will pee in the crate.

Paper training is not the way to go.  Its not housebreaking, its just a lazy way of training.  Most pups trained with papers and pee pads are harder to train to pee outside later.

Puppies need access to water at ALL times.  Small breed puppies should be fed frequently to prevent hypoglycemia.

You also can NOT get a 3 week old puppy.  Its still with its mom and is not weaned yet.  Puppies sleep alot.. but they also pee, p**p and eat!  The youngest you can get a puppy is 8 weeks old.

Puppies also make poor Christmas gifts.  You are better to get a puppy when things are not so hectic.  With visitors, baking, decorations, visiting people, Christmas programs, etc..  its just not a good time to bring a puppy to a home.  The puppy is stressed about leaving its mom as it is.  You are better to wait until after the holiday is over and the family is back to a normal routine.

Also you are not even allowed to be on this site until you are 13.

  5. 1- it's shih-tzu not **** have you done any research??

2- getting a puppy for christmas is a very very bad idea. Holidays are very busy and frantic and then more stress comes when you decide to get a puppy. They need more attention then you think.

3 weeks old???  Are you kidding me?? Don't expect it to be alive when you come back from school.

You can't just get a little puppy, stick it in a cage for hours and hours and expect it to be fine. you'll come home to piles of p**p and pee and a sad pup with a massive case of separation anxiety.

Bottom line- you don't need a puppy

  6. 3 weeks old? I think you still need to do a little more research. You shouldn't even think about taking home a dog until 8 weeks.

  7. i just got a puppy and just turned 13. it is a big responsibility. i am at camp from 9-4, so i cant be with her. she is getting potty trained, and is well behaved. you can get a hypo-allergenic dog. if nobody is home, there are doggy day cares that tke dogs during the day. not all take untrained dogs. it is very tiring, you have to clean up its accidents, feed it on time, take care of it when it cries at night, but if you want the responsibility, go ahead and get a dog. but make sure you're ready.

  8. 3 weeks? you should get one about 2 months or older sorry if i burst your bubble but u cant get a dog that young.
