  1. A switch is a layer 2 ethernet device.....by layer 2 it means the Switch does not care what you ip address is it only forwards the packet (rather the frame) based on the destination mac address.

    When you send data to an ip address in a ethernet segment if the address is in same subnet as of the sender machine then the packet is not send to a router (rather default gateway) and the switch checks for the destination mac address of the packet (frame) and outputs it out of the right port to which that destination  device is connected.

    Switches are available from 2 port to 24 port + the number of ports = the number of machines you can connect to it.

    Cisco, Dlink are few good manufacturers.
