I just cancelled my home landline but I have a backup phone beside my cell phone.

I use MagicJack device, which use my internet to make calls and receiving calls.  Very cheap, I sign up for 5 years service for I believed less than $60 bucks plus $40 for the device.

You can also sign up for 1 year service for $30 or $40 which included the device.  Then, each year after the 1st would be $20.  So, it's worth the money for 5 years for $100 including the device.

Bad idea.  What if power goes out for like a week?  You use your iPhone until it drains its battery then you can't charge it.  If you had a land line you could still call people.
